Minor Rant - America Killed Top Gear

I haven't seen any of the US episodes, but what made it for me was the interplay between the hosts. Besides the "short one with the teeth" weren't they auto reviewers or something?

This will be like the third time they've tried to bring the show over here. The last one didn't make it past a single pilot, and I don't expect this one to do any better. I'll just stick with the original, thanks.

The majority of the time the History channel is like the sci fi channel and shows about as many good shows about actual history as the sci fi channel does good shows with actual sci fi. The History channel used to rock!

I am convinced the same idiot who run SyFy has his hands in the other cable channels now.

My rant is VH1Classics...used to be a great channel to have on in the background and watch all those retro videos of the golden years....now it's stupid movies and reality shows.

I think they have tried it with just about anything that was remotely popular on the BBC.
I can think of off hand-
Red Dwarf(that wasn't as bad as others)
Dr Who(I didn't like it, but now that I look back it some things in common with the new Who).
Coupling(They did the very same scripts, someone from UK the could pull of. But American actors would only kill their carers. It was amongst some the worst stuff I have ever seen).
These was an endless stream of game shows, and the ever lame reality shows.

But a US Top Gear, I'm very glad I no longer have to endure satellite.
Shouldn't all of the hosts on that show be fat?

It's going to come off flat, quite frankly a better version of US Top Gear would have hosts such as, Brock Yates, Hal Needham, Burt Reynolds, Dom Deluise(you can't get him to easily), etc. I'm sure we could come up with more funny car guys. I can't stand these shows where they put on some people say they are experts(no they are actors on a TV show). That nobody has ever heard of nor care. Put them in a rebooted, rehashed TV show and tell us how much we all going to love it.

When the reality is like taking a Bugatti Veyron to it's top gear, and stopping it on/in a very very thick brick wall.

I'm so glad I don't work in the entertainment industry.
I would be fired for being the one voice in the room saying, "What idiot thought this was a good idea."

Ya know... I wonder if Jay Leno would be a worthy host? He might be too much of a diva to work in a group setting like that, but hes a big car guy...

One of my favorite episodes of Top Gear was the race across the southern US..with the Stig's fat American cousin.
If they were going for comedians, Chris Titus would have been a perfect choice

We have out own version of Top Gear too. It's OK but it's not anywhere nearly as good as the original. A good show is a good show, and a large part of that are the hosts. I really don't see the need to re-make it.

My wife had a comment when I told her about this. What kind of cars are they going to exhibit. If you had just American cars the show isn't going to last very long. Even if you add Japanese cars, there isn't a very big stable of cars to choose from. It's nothing like Europe where just about every country has a car maker. And to make it worse Europe sports some(just about all) of the high end exotic cars in the world.

This show is going to be a big bore. Glad I'm going to miss it.

So who are they going to use for the Stig?
(Will it be a woman?):lol

Britain has no car industry to talk of, why would that be an issue in the US ?
Can't you buy high end European cars over there ?

I agree. VH1 classics fallen apart in the last year. That Metal Show I like because it's relavent but if i want to see an 80s movie i'll go to my dvds. This top gear is just another nail in History's coffin before they lose their long time viewers.

Yes we can, but the point is Europe is home to the greatest car makers in the world. US Top Gear would only be repeating what the original would exhibit. The only difernce is the view from driving on the left side. I would rather watch your guys presentation.

I seem to remember a few little heard of car makers in the UK, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Lotus, MG, Aston Martin.
We Got Ford, GM, and Chrysler. There are a few others but the US can't match the mystique of the UK car makers. We have some really great cars in the US. But nothing from Cadillac can match Rolls Royce.

I'm not sure what his work ethics are in that regard, but I know he's a HUGE car nut, and I've really enjoyed it whenever he's made a guest appearance on Top Gear. I'd say he should be a shoo-in for the "Jeremy" role.

Tim allen would be great for an american top gear.

no... no he wouldn't....

to do an American top gear you need 3 car enthusiasts that happen to be funny... not 3 idiots trying to be funny, trying to talk like they know something about cars...

honestly, you think Adam Ferrara knows diddly about what makes a Lotus Exige worth drivng? Or could tell you the shortcomings of a Bugatti Veyron?

Leno is a die hard car enthusiast, but he always comes off as goofy. Not exactly someone who's opinion about a $250,000 car you would trust. Not to mention that he has no taste when it comes to cars. He just buys and buys. He's more a collector then a connoisseur.

And that's why Top Gear UK works. They are 3 connoisseurs. They don't always agree, but they each have their own tastes as to what makes a car great.

Top Gear UK has the perfect balance of people who are funny, and yet serious enough to trust their opinions

Leave well enough alone and just import the UK Top Gear... I don't see Ferrara or Leno ever being able to pull of something like Bus racing, or driving a Semi through a trailer and a brick wall....
