Millennium Falcon - Revell Easykit - beginner info

Hi

Ive been reading the forum posts over the last month or so and have been blown away by the sheer brilliance of you guys and your modelling skills! I've been inspired!

Its been a while since I did any modelling but I am looking at getting the Revell Easykit Falcon (as it's cheap and from what I've read it's actually not that bad a kit).

Ive noticed the sides are a little fat and some of you have cut yours down to give the Falcon it's more accurate flatter look. Can anyone give me some tips on doing this? I.e. which parts will need to be cut, and how much needs to be cut off etc? Also, if I make the kit as it is, is it possible to take it apart at a later date if I decide not to make any amendments to begin with?

Any help would be appreciated. I can't wait to get it and get started, I'm particularly fond of weathering and I may even create a slightly battle damaged Falcon.

Like i ke I said, you guys have inspired me to do something, can't wait to get more involved.

Hi Luke! Welcome! I used the snap kit and for the most part really liked it. I cut about 1/4 inch from my side walls and the inner wall that runs along the two halves of the hull. I used a dremel tool with a cutting wheel to cut them down. I think I cut from the bottom if I remember correctly. This of course kills all hopes of a studio accurate Falcon but I got mine for cheap and I really don't build for accuracy, just over all resulting look. I super glued the cut and sanded side walls onto the bottom half first and then glued on the top. Here is the link to mine. I like the shape but I'm not to happy with the paint job..... might be a re-paint project one of these days!

Thanks for the link, yours looks fantastic! If I can get mine to look as good as that then I'll be happy.

Did you have to do much alternation to the front section after cutting the sides? I also want to go down the same route as you and have an overall better looking model and not 100% screen accurate.

I cut and attached the front mandible area pieces the same way. I did do a lot of cutting and altering on the very front tips of the mandibles (where the headlights are). And the side escape pods; I had to cut and reconstruct the panels on the top and bottom of the pods. This can be avoided if you cut very carefully. I mis-cut and had to do a patch job around them. After I cut my sidewalls and sanded all the flash off I glued a lot of small greebles into the sides to cover any areas that had a evident "cut" look. You can get a lot of these small pieces from other kits and from craft stores that sell small beads, tubes and shapes often used for making necklaces. For my Falcon I kit bashed a P-47 and used engine and suspension parts from a 2003 NASCAR kit. I forgot to mention that you will have to cut a slot out of the lower hull to allow for the cockpit to sit lower. I just eyeballed it and sanded a small semi circle until the two pieces cleared and the halves mated up.
