MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Has anyone ever tried to do a design of hoverboard with giant magnets repelling each-other? I've often wondered if we can get earth magnets large enough to repel each-other if that could lift up a person... I'm probably wrong but.

a possible upgrade for all you Hoverboard lovers?

Crealev have been contacting me for a while trying to get a free hoverboard out of me so they could do this, they never gave me any incentive to actually give them one though (they weren't willing to pay for it). I thought they would've used a Matty one rather than making a half scale mock up of their own though.

didnt you offer a trait ? a hoverboard vs a Crealev system?

How cool would a display be of a accurate Hoverboard that is floating? I'll bet you could get some cool promotion with it?

Anyone else seen this b******t? Saw it on my Facebook, think VideoBob spotted it...

It's always better to check the source before we assume the worst.

I did a reverse image search and found that image nowhere,
and after doing some separate searches for references about them being in stores I found nothing.
Which if this were true, it'd be all over the news pages of the sites that reviewed the board in the first place.

I imagine it's either one of two things:

a) Someone purchased a bunch of them to sell in their own store.

b) The picture has been staged.

I'm happy to be proven wrong however.

Good old Matty Collector...$120 each.

Sounds like they're just selling the tons of leftover stock that nobody bought.

It's not in generic brand toystores like Toys R Us right?

Sounds about right! I'm in the UK so have no idea but I would be surprised if it was in your generic toy store. I wonder how much stock really is left over from the production run? I'd be interested to know...

"Are you sure about that? "
Yes.
I do have a background having worked towards an electrical engineering degree. As for the physics, again yes, physics is a side hobby as well. Lectured for NASA for the last twenty years on meteorites and material science.
NASA - Catch a Falling Star

Asking for a electrical engineer for help with a working hoverboard is a bit of a funny question, and given there have been newbies on the board asking for it seriously to be done as well some very serious same questions posed on the Matty board, seemed an appropriate answer. More over, your push to justify such a question by citing examples of other technology spin offs, just seems to more strengthen the idea that you want to make a working hoverbioard a reality with a random electrical engineer here. Sorry to have pushed your buttons on the question posed but it was a bit funny with the manner you asked as well your follow up.

You might want to be a bit more specific on what your goals are, if you are looking at a hovering display similar to the globe displays or if you are considering a type of air compressed hoverboard design as you posted in the youtube video above.

Hi, i was one of those nut cases last year, saying Mattel should build a real one, my idea was to create a control environment, like a indoor skating
rink and have someone develop a way it could work. (we have anti gravity rooms) so why not Hoverboards?

There was a French artist that got a board to hover using lasers. There were German artists that used some sort of rail system. A few years
back some Israeli's students use what looked like an ice hockey puck on a table and made it hover going around and around.

So why not a skating type rink in a controlled environment, dont know how they would do it? I know a hoverboard, like in the movie, using it outside, is
many many life times away. But a type of hoverboard like in an amusement park setting, indoors in a controlled environment, surly that can happen in our life time?

If you look at those super conductivity experiments, you will find the conditions yo be impractical for what you are proposing. To keep the conditions of the experiments noted, you have to use some toxic materials as well produce extreme temperatures over a wide area. It is impractical to apply and engineer as you want at this time. There are theories on high temperature super conductivity but again, on the scale you are speaking and with the use you are talking of, just not practical to do. In those cases, you are manipulating the environment, not producing a board capable of hovering on its own. If you did create a large scale room, the cost would be astronomical for that ride around the room, not to mention the dangers of the environment to do so in. Those desktop examples are just that with extreme limitations. The technologies you are asking for just are not available on such a scale and while it would be cool to have, the reality is that the hoverboard is a fictional device and will continue to be such for some time into the future.

If you want a ride, they could hook up a pole to the bottom of a board as they did in the filming and you could zoom around the room like a carnival ride. I would hate to think of the liability of you took a fall on that system. It would be more practical and you get an illusion effect. But in the end, its as cheap of an experience as the method. You would be better to go snowboarding or skiing and have a better feel in a real environment. Or, attach wheels to the board and have a skate board. The "hover effect you are looking towards is just not a reality than me as a pilot demanding Boeing make a functional X-wing with all the movie capabilities.

Yep, the Mattel building is 6 blocks from my house and I saw this display. Still not worth $120 though.

You're totally right, for the requested price it's a complete joke.

I sent you a DM by the way, not sure if you received it. Was enquiring about whether you still sell the phonebook page.

Wow, awesome reply, that explains it real well, I had written about controlled environments
at other boards, but only got smart ass answers, this explains it real well, its ended my
childhood, (at middle age) but well written answer! :)

Now what about Biffs pitbull? LOL!

And meanwhile...I gave up trying to get my mini-board they owed me because I would rather try to seduce an alligator while wearing a suit of meat than deal with the bass ackwards customer service they have.

...I can't wait to see them have to drop the prices and put those things on sale to clear out old stock.
