MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Interesting, I'm also working on a version of this sign. For the words NO HOVERBOARDING you should not use Arial, Futura Bold looks more authentic.

Here's the version I did when I got bored one night. (Including the peculiarities of this sign...like the off center white circle) Feel free to use it to your heart's content.

I used Gotham for my font. It was the nearest approximation I had. Gotham Black would likely be even closer.

So, here's my version of the NO HOVERBOARDING sign. Not perfect, but best I could do from the blurry screenshots.

Enjoy

Nice work, Cmdr.Kerner! Yours looks the most authentic to me.

Compared with a screen cap with wrong colors. ;) The brown background of the sign should be much darker. I would use dark gray or anthracite color.

Congratulations Roland for finding another picture that shows the sign in the truer colours. With that reference in hand I'm sure they all could have determined the accurate colour, but they didn't have it.

With the photo reference that was shown, it looked very much olive drab like. But you know what, I hadn't seen that photo. :)

Thanks for the reference picture.

Great work everyone! Thanks.

Love this place.

Going to get that sign printed at some point to display with the board.
I'm going with Cmdr.Kerner's one as it looks the most accurate to me. Cheers.

That would make the perfect t-shirt, too. I was going to whip up this sign too, but it looks like a bunch of you have it taken care of.:popcorn

I just got my 'upgrade' kit from *bttf123 and couldn't be happier with the results. I have learned to accept the Matty stickers, and since I am terrible at applying stickers, I decided to go pass up Roland's fantastic graphics (at least for now...).

It's amazing, adding the fur to the strap makes a world of difference. That and the green velcro make it look like a quality product now.

I'm sure that even you wouldn't have any problems applying my decals. The material is strong, not that thin vinyl sticker material. The chances of producing bubbles are very, very small. And producing creases is almost impossible. ;)

I really wish you would stop bashing vinyl. It cost me a great deal of money to have my decals made, and for you to just poo poo it is extremely disrespectful.

How would you feel if you worked on a project for 6 months WHILE moving states, just to have someone crap all over it like this? Let alone the guy that designed your graphics!

Bashing Vinyl? It wouldn't even occur to me to do so. Vinyl is a great material and I often use it myself for many projects. But let's be honest: Vinyl IS thin. And using it can be difficult if done without the right experience. There's a great danger of producing a lot of bubbles and creases. It's the same with self-adhesive paper or any other thin material.

You're absolutely right, Roland. It IS a great material, it has no seams whatsoever, so the artwork is perfectly represented, it's very glossy, easy to clean, durable, and is very simple to apply with the use of soapy water and a squeegee.

You have been making it seem like this material is total rubbish and that nobody should use it. My board decals are made of Vinyl... it is shattering to read somebody saying that the material that you used... at great expense, is no good.

That's what I mean when I talk about "experience". ;) Most people don't have that experience and knowledge.

If so, I'm sorry. That was never my intention. You should never interpret too much into my words. :)

By the way: your Hoverboard replica is great. Not least due to the Vinyl. ;)

Thank you for clearing this up Roland. I don't know if soapy water and a squeegee is experience though, this was my first time applying vinyl and it was pretty easy.

Thanks also for the compliment about my board. I hope that people realize now that Vinyl isn't a bad material to use, it's a good alternative if you want a fairly durable, seamless and weather proof solution to these graphics. You may get the occasional bubble but those are easy enough to massage out of the decal.

I personally like the fact that it's thin. It makes the whole piece feel realistic.

Of course it is. I wouldn't have any problems using it for my own Hoverboard build. There are just two reasons why I couldn't use Vinyl for my upgrade kit. First (less important) reason is: the photo paper of the screen used stunt boards is stronger than Vinyl. Second (and more important) reason is: I'm offering decals with already attached Velcro, so my material HAS to be strong.

You see: I don't say anything against Vinyl in general. It's a great material. I just can't use it in my specific case. :)

Either one works...

I think that laminated paper would work better on the MattyCollector board because there is a recessed outline for the sticker to go into.

Vinyl will work better on BTTFSpencer's board because it is a flat/smooth surface. It almost looks like it is printed on the board itself and is beautiful.

I think vinyl is a better choice for a display piece and it doesn't HAVE to be 100% 'prop accurate'. Let's be honest, they were thrown together like crappy arts and crafts projects and not meant to be photographed close up. We are making these things to show off. :D

Also, don't confuse high quality vinyl with cheap stick material. Some people on here have been using the ideas interchangeably when discussing. The MattyBoard certainly doesn't have vinyl, it really is a cheap ass sticker material!
