MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

I just prefer my seatbelt webbing because it has close to the right pattern. White guitar straps would still look really nice though.

I think the strap is actually a pretty important mod for the Matty board, it's one of the major flaws. They didn't even get it anywhere near a ballpark closeness. It's friggin' Velcro.

Has anyone looked into the material that sneakers are made of? They have a mesh pattern. Not canvas, but it's a webbing that you find on the interior.

This is TheRPF, right? There's gotta be some fabric experts that could help us out on this thing. :lol

If not, I might go do some searching on some fashion forums or something like that and ask if anybody recognizes the stuff.

I used 2" seatbelt webbing. It works great because it's thick enough to stand up on it's own. I have a little strip of white velcro attached to the strap on the inside so I can have it "rest flat" if I choose (it sticks to the green footpad velcro).

I'm often worng. Trust me, I know how it feels. :lol

The one thing that still throws me is that the edges of the webbing are wonky on that photo of the original. Looks like it's really thin and got stretched or something.

Clock88, on your webbing can you pose it all the way up to this position and have it stay?

Your board looks REALLY good. Virtually identical to the original in that picture. Are you planning on using rivets on the foot strap like on the originals?

It's funny you use that picture for reference. That board has always been the one I have wanted to "pull" right out of the movie and have for myself. I personally think it is the perfect hero board.

I am actually going to make a couple of different footpads. I have used a magnet on the bottom of the pad (and in the board) so I can easily switch them out. I am going to have one flat, one standing up like the picture, and the one I have now which is sort of in-between the two.

A cool tip is to spray the fur with a little spray adhesive to give it that corse/rough look and feel.

I think I am going to buy rivets and glue them on (with some black vinyl as a backer) just to get the right look. Do you know where I can get those round rings?

The final conclusion for the color of the lenticular is an interesting one. I think I have nailed the color 100% (not on this board but after more testing). The problem is, it looks like this under normal indoor lighting...

When you look at it outside or take a flash photo, it looks fantastic. But if you are looking at it under normal indoor lighting conditions, it looks really salmony.

The stuff I have on the current board looks awesome inside, but gets a bit too lavender outside and looks purple when you take a flash photo. I think I have come to the conclusion that I want the color to look like a nice light pink in normal lighting rather than be 100% prop accurate. The prop accurate color just doesn't look good unless you are outside (like it was in the movie).

Maybe this is why mattel went the direction they did with the colors and other elements.

I think there are some rational explenations for some of there design choices, not sure what they are but im sure there are some. For example maybe the board was designed so people can stand on it?

After researching a little, it turns out that there's a technical difference between and eyelet and a rivet. While very similar, rivets tend to have solid ends, whereas an eyelet gets it's name from being hollow all the way through, causing a hole at the end.

I also believe eyelets tend to be smaller in general, whereas rivets come commonly in more sizes, including larger ones. Though I'm just speculating on that part.

I believe studs are also like rivets, in that they tend to have a solid ends also.

On that note, given that fashionable clothing belts, and older seat-belts do indeed occasionally have eyelets embedded into them, I imagine finding some suitable craftish eyelets shouldn't be too hard for the hoverboard strap.

Dictionary:

"A metal pin for passing through holes in two or more plates or pieces to hold them together, usually made with a head at one end, the other end being hammered into a head after insertion."

Indeed!

Rivet - "a metal pin for passing through holes in two or more plates or pieces to hold them together, usually made with a head at one end, the other end being hammered into a head after insertion."

Eyelet - "a small hole, usually round and finished along the edge, as in cloth or leather for the passage of a lace or cord or as in embroidery for ornamental effect."
