MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Here is my Matty board with the upgrade kit from bttf123* and some white electrical tape for the boarder of the footpad. :cool I still need to decide on shortening the foot strap but for now this is good enough.

Looks great!

The board that Tim (bttf123) has on eBay with the lenticular decals looks amazing!! Wow! The lenticular makes the difference.

So after much deliberation I have decided to upgrade my hoverboard. Orignnaly I was appose to the idea as it would decrease the value of the "collectable" But then i figured what the hell, im not selling it, I love BTTF way to much. Never going to own a delorean (unless I win the lotto or something) might as well have a nice hoverboard.

How much are your Kits. All I am really looking for is the pink fuzzy strap and the Green velcro strip. The rest I can do easily.

"If this thing had come out looking exactly like the ones people make on eBay it would not be as collectable. I'm sure in 30 years it will be valued very high."

Absolutely wrong on both counts.

First, as a licensed collectible well made, this would have been an incredible demanded item from the start and only would go up in value from there universally with all collectors. But it is not.
Instead, you have a terrible constructed piece that begs for another company to make nicer licensed one. As well the original stickers are peeling right now and its is poorly constructed. Its a crap shoot to know if you get a good one and the only way to know is to open and destroy the packaging to do so. No Mint In the Box for this toy. As a long term toy collector, I know that one of the main issues to hold value for older toys is that they remain pristine. You don't have that with the current one sent out right now. Will it be collectible down the road... yes, for a small segment that will want a pristine mint in box piece with no damage, which you do not get and cannot get with this release.

Yeah I said **** it and am modding mine. I don't think I will go as far as to replace the decals as mine (knock on wood) have not peeled and look somewhat decent (no bubbles or creases) I had already put black electrical tape in the peg hole and it looks so much better then the bright pink hole that looked out of place. Now the hole looks as it should. I am modding the pink strap next. I think that is the worst part on the whole thing. Everyone who has looked at my board say WTF is up with this strap it look bad. Also I like the green Velcro stripe that runs the length of the board. I will probably do that as well. However after spending so much money on this I am not looking to spend a bunch on "upgrading" it. my proton pack build is sucking up way to much money at the moment to be spending on the hoverboard as well.

Maybe I will hit up joan fabrics over the weekend to look for some furry pink material.

I love how some random guy (no offence bttf123) could get this right and a major toy company failed at this. That thing looks SEXY. Bttf123 you should submit a application to mattel with the title I am better then your current employees. Or something like that. I would love to see there reply.

Hi, is anybody still waiting for there Hoverboard in Australia? No tracking number and a long ass wait, Mattel is p-ing me off, so glad I was brought up on Matchbox cars and not Hot Wheels

yep, that bttf123 conversion looks AWESOME o_O too bad he's not making update kits for that :(

Tim (bttf123) is anything BUT some "random guy" when it comes to BTTF replicas btw.

I was just saying he is not a major toy manufacture, Here is something that a independent person made. I know bttf123 is a established prop builder and I hope no offence was taken. but COME ON MATTEL. WTF! Just some simple things could have made this board so much better. (black hole post, pink furry strap, ect.) Honestly the lack of shinny holographic sticker does not even bother me as much as that horrible foot strap. I have watched all the movies and i think they only show the board being shinny in like one or two scenes I remember it being a flat design.

The strap is made out of the "loop" side of the velcro used for the other end of the board, instead of adding another type of material to the product, to increase cost efficiency.

Wow I did not think of that, talk about cutting corners to shave profits. Is it possible that the "project" or division that was developing the boards ran out of "money" or budget for the project. I just can't imagine them designing it this bad. Something must have happened during the development cycle. Maybe the higher ups put a unrealistic time frame on the project.

Well, luckily most of the stuff that's REALLY messed up is the "detail work". The strap sucks, the velcro kinda sucks, the stickers are cheap and poorly designed. And the sounds suck, unless you're really into Star Wars.

The magnets are widened to help cover the fact that it's not one big sticker on the bottom, which personally doesn't bother me so much. The Battery Box doesn't have the indents around the screw-holes so that it would be simpler to actually house the batteries.

But the actual build itself, the pink florescent plastic, the fact that the Magnets and Battery Box are separate pieces, that's all pretty solid. I've been really happy with my straight Pink board on my stand. It seems pretty durable, too.

If it had to come down to it, I'd rather see it have cheap stickers and no fur than a really cheap plastic base. I don't know what happened, but i'm pretty much done complaining about it. It coulda ended up much worse, i'm more disappointed in Mattel/Matty than the shipped board. Would have still bought it if I knew then what I know now.

I dig the board for what it is, especially once Roland returns with more pics. :love

Vinz, I can see what your saying, and I kind of agree. Originally I did not want to mod the board, but after seeing the board on my wall for a month begging or a better strap. So I will be hitting up joan fabrics (probably my best bet locally for the furry strap) all of the other things I can over look. After that I think i want to move on to a cool BTTF display.

Also for those who are interested, I weight about 240 and I have stood on mine a lot with no ill effects. Kind of makes me think this is why they designed the magnet disks the way they are.

I had accepted modding mine LONG before it actually hit the front porch. I was going to have Roland's decal printed before he announced his kits.

Instead of Joanns, you might want to hit Hobby Lobby instead, if you've got one locally. I found some really nice pink fur there, Joanns usually sticks to Black/White/Brown for fur.

Wow, Page 100.

No, we do not have hobby lobby where I live, its micheals or joan fabrics, there are a few independent stores I could check. I might just wait until the weekend and pick up one of those kits I saw on ebay, it was like $30. hopfuly its still around. Is anyone going to make third party hologram stickers?

I am waiting like a fish for food on word of progress from Roland. Every day is a disappointment when i check this thread and don't see the post so many must be waiting on.

Its definitely the waiting that gets ya.

You will see pics of the finished decals next weekend. Yesterday I got my new green Velcro and it looks veeeery good. :) I hope the seller (from UK) has more of it.

Roland will you be selling "upgrade" kits that include both new stickers as well as proper velcro?

I was watching BTTF3 today and I think the board that most resembles the matty board is the one doc gives to marty before sending him to 1885. He says (did you remember that floating device?) It is non-holographic, has green lines instead of velcro and has the smooshed down strap. anyways worth a look.

Also on a totally unrelated side note, Has anyone found it weird that doc has had an identical looking dog for over 30 years.
