MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

In a few months you will be able to compare all those colors to the Mattel board (and not just the pink). I expect it will be subjected to some serious scrutiny :lol.

I've got this sitting my garage from a previous project:

I'm thinking that I will use this for my stunt board, and then decide if it will also make to to a future hero board.

True, but based on all the other accuracies they tossed out the window, I wouldn't be surprised at this point if the color was off too.

That's the best way to describe it. I think the salmon color is an aspect of the "fluorescent/neon" nature of the pink.

Here is good example of how the Hoverboard color should be. At these shoes you can see how different the color appears pending on the light intensity and angle.

I'm a bigger BTTF fan than anyone on this thread combined times a trillion and I have to say (being a time traveler) that I saw this coming which is why I never pre-ordered anything, I'll leave it to you peeps to complain until the finished re-finished product is worth buying, never pre-order a BTTF prop replica, like the Flux Capacitor from Diamond Select it will always be inaccurate compared to the meticulous fan-made props, that's a lesson you don't need a time machine to learn. Also I have no intention on getting a car loan just to buy some of the 2011 Nike Mags, all I have to do is wait until 2015 (or set my time machine to 2015), the final product is better, mass produced and affordable, it really kills the re-sellers that didn't sell their Mags by January 2015, the value drops drastically.

I've seen a number of the original screen used hoverboards in person and up close they are very sloppy compared to some of these fan-made versions, you can see the glue zig zagging under the tape, so in the end we will never get *exact* replicas but I too am not a fan of what Matty Collector have cranked out.

I also saw the original Mattel handle bars in person, not only that but I touched 'em, they were screwed to a box at Universal Studios Hollywood, I didn't know it at the time but it was the original, there never was a 2nd pair of pink Mattel handlebars made, other than the alternate yellow/orange colored one for the other girl's hoverboard. So I got to touch it and I tried to take it outa the box, this was in 1991.

Thats really interesting about the pink and the hue, I never realised/or thought of that before. Its awesome to learn something new about the hoverboard.

Pics or it didn't happen. :)

If it helps I can probably get PMS codes for the boards that Mattel examined. I know the pink that they were trying to match was VERY florescent. Slightly brighter than the Barbie pink that Mattel uses for it's packaging. As Razimus would probably agree with, the real life pinks on the screen used boards rarely match the photos and even the way the pink color looks in the film. I have seen a few boards in person.

For again cost reasons the Mattel board will be molded in pink. The pink will be slightly off to the real life screen boards. From talking to a few people however that have seen the molded color it looks almost exactly like the pink in the film...which I believe they were aiming for.

Interesting that the MattyCollector hoverbotch forum is starting to have unanswered questions again. They seem to be dodging the reason for being unable to delay the release to improve the board..... grrrrr....

Actually, they gave the reason, they cannot afford to redo the board properly. They have spent the budget and need to come out on time.

Basically, Yes, we screwed up, we will try to fix the aesthetics if we want to, and it will come out as we said it would, not what we said originally on the accuracy stuff, that is unimportant now... and expensive.

That is why i don't expect too much of it now, they admitted they know what is wrong but are going forward anyhow. That ethics and principle mission statement thrown out the door for profit. And for that, this becomes a textbook example of how you screw up a project of such importance and screw the customer and themselves in the process.

Update:

"Checked test pieces of the foil and it looks bad. These however were old graphics on older boards, pre-SDCC. I have been told that they are dumping the foil and going with a regular label. Much like the NYTF and SDCC boards, but with updated accurate graphics. This is good, since regular is easier to produce and way better looking than the foil."

Sounds like the final board may look closer to a stunt board instead of neither stunt or hero.

I'm still working on getting PMS color codes and accurate dimensions off the screen boards that were measured. I may start a new thread for all of that.

Thanks,
Dave

... I'm still working on getting PMS color codes ...

They have the exact Pantone codes? Wow, let us know! We need the codes for the pink background color of the board, the green color of the footpad and the dark red/orange and purple colors of the "magnet" holders and the "battery". :)

Saw that coming. I was actually kinda hoping for the lenticular, oh well. I guess I'll have to have two boards on display now -- Matty's "stunt", and a hero (aka "an RPF Special" :lol).

There should also be threads on how to make the time circuits and flux capacitor. Not necessarily functional ones, but more of a budget DIY sort of thing. There seems to be an EXTREME lack of information on these props.

Well, I just tried Rustolem Fluorescent Pink and I have to admit, it looks really good. It has that great pink color, with a excellent hint of that orange/salmon color in indoor lighting. When I move outside, it has a slightly more mellow pink that's similar to seen in the movie. I'm going to use this stuff for my own board, though I'm also interested in the color codes as well. :)

Also, glad to hear it's going to be a stunt board-like graphic than that foil crap.
