MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Haha, I should be expecting a phonecall tomorrow from Sommers about the stuff. Maybe we should all pitch in and do one big group order. :)

Hey there,

Just to let you know... I have also called them recently and spoke with the CEO!

He said that they can't make custom colors anymore and only sell the ones that are in stock. He suggested the clear stuff, but I have tried it before and it just isn't the same. ;)

My reaction: :cry

After contacting Rowlex for the same reason, they will only do a custom color roll of 10,000 square feet which is over 10k cost! Can we get 10 guys willing to donate 1k? :)

Just sent some samples to Dave... hopefully we can get a run done in China. :)

Let me guess, is his name Fred? That's the name of the guy they made me leave a message for. Thanks for the heads up, Clock.

Shame that Sommers and Rowlex won't do that stuff anymore or for cheap. Chalk one up for the Stunt board for being much simpler than the Hero, lol.

Here is a very good picture of the lower side of an original stunt board for comparison. I will use it for comparison, when I build my own Hoverboard. This picture is photographed from an excellent viewing angle.

hey that board has "wheel wells" for skateboard wheels that's cool :)

Now that you mention it: yes, that's really funny. And I have already been wondered what these dents might be. Cool! It seems that they used a real skateboard deck for that Hoverboard. :lol

That might be the reason why several original Hoverboards have different sizes.

I'm a little on the fence on this one guys. Clearly they are showing frustration in their video. Whether this is because they got caught out and are now redesigning the board to be more accurate to satisify up hardcore fans, or the fact that the videos uploaded to YouTube were from people trying to purposely stir by not including footage of the notice to the side of the cabinet. :confused

The real board was badly made and the reason it didn't look like a toy was because it was designed to be lightweight for hovering scenes, as we all know. Perhaps it won't be a bad thing that it's not 100% accurate as it will actually be better quality and perhaps even like it was meant to be back in the 80s but either lazyness or technology prevented it..?

There's plenty of ways to look at it, i'm all for accuracy, but only if it's good quality. The 2011 Nike Mags were a perfect example of improving the shoddy film prop quality for proper use.

Quick update from my inside guy. I'm hoping this info helps you guys in determining whether to keep your pre-order or not.

Good news, bad news:

First the bad. Sculpt is done. I took some measurements and looks like the hardware is a little too big. Should be about 5% smaller and have more "distance" between the two mag discs. Board is correct size.

Good news. Graphics are being completely redone. No guarantee on lenticular yet, but I hope to correct whatever I can by now being involved.

There is an "unexpressed agreement" that the marketing on this did not help. As usual, marketing over promised on something. Nothing changes here.

More later...

Thanks for the info, Dave. You were right all along on the sculpt (unfortunately :lol).

I am really disappointed they can't fix the hardware. This is seriously the one thing they could have so easily gotten right.

Makes you wonder if they used an original skateboard deck as a base for the hero boards. I might need to check some of my old Valterras to see if anything lines up :)

wow i feel pretty good for noticing that. i've never seen a board that thick though. I need to research! :D

TFS, autoprops! :)

I'm going to start looking at the Mattyboard as a toy, rather than a replica prop. If it was marketed as a toy instead of a exacting replica then this whole fiasco wouldn't happen in the first place.

At the same time, I'm not the type that pays $140 for a toy.

In other news, I talked with the guy from Sommers. He was very nice and we chatted for a bit about the hoverboard and the lenticular material. Now, when I talked to him it didn't sound like custom colors were impossible and that he was going to look into getting a quote for me. I got his email address and he's going to get back with me with more info.

It was interesting to hear that he knew about the hoverboard connection and he also been getting calls about the rainbow plastic for Marty's 2015 cap.

He also was interested in some photos of the hero board to display on the company website so if it's possible for anyone to PM or send links those to me, I'll go ahead and forward them to him. Thanks in advance!

I remember, as a kid (sometime in the 80s) I had a skateboard which was that thick, but it was much smaller than the Hoverboard.

Were any of my graphics helpful?

Most good pictures available are those of the stunt board. Apart from screen shots the only hero board pictures I can offer, are two pictures of the board with wheels. Both pictures show exactly the same board. First one is the auction picture from screenused.com and the second one is a picture from the buyer of the board.

Thanks for the pictures, Roland! I can't thank you enough for all the awesome hoverboard info you've shared with us. :)

So, so glad to hear Mattel is finally doing something right too.

So the hardware should look right, or at least better, just be slightly larger? I think I can live with that... Thanks for helping so much!

The hardware should LOOK right but as my guy mentioned, the scale is slightly off. I think improved redone graphics should help with that a bit.

Another update:

Getting angles worked out and sizing.

Good news to collectors: Mattel logo will match the "wrong" screen accurate logo. On the real Mattel logo, the M and L touch the edge of star. Screen logo has boarder, more red.

Some fans have expressed how some graphic parts are wrong. But, there are screen shots of what was referenced. So, depending on the board used, some current "mistakes" are justified. New board graphics will show comparison to screen shots.

As for the sculpt, that again is final.

More later...
