MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

I'm reading comments saying designed as a toy. So instead of a true prop we are getting a stylized hoverboard made by Mattel? They should have just told the public this from the start, explain they have toy safety standards they simply must abide by.

That's not even the worst of it, Clock88.

I just quickly adjusted both of those image to account for the differences in perspective, then traced the screen used board's components.

Not much lines up at all...

What is does show though, is that the silver area of the magnets is the right size, but the rest of them are oversized for whatever reason. I don't even know where to begin listing the errors...including the fact that the graphics don't line up and the thickness of various colored lines and graphics aren't even close to being right.

This really is a case where I wish they'd go back to the drawing board instead of trying to salvage this mess of a product.

Then again, maybe they'll make a fool of me at NYCC...but I'm not holding my breath.

Hey Nick,

Please re-read my post - I edited the images and text so it was more clear.

Just know, Nick, that the board in the video image is tilted at an angle. It's going to look worse than it it because the prop is directly head on to camera.

But saying that, it is still way off.

EDIT: I see you adjust some of the tilt. This helps... Yea man, it's pretty damn off.

I corrected to match the perspective. I matched as many reference points as possible...which was quite hard because of how different these two boards are.

...and yeah, I just saw your edited post. Much clearer.

And here, I worked up a different correction for the perspective, based on the graphics rather than the board...

What I find interesting is that more things line up...so it seems that they've been scaling things to their decal, which even they admit had to be scaled incorrectly for its "toy" classification.

To make this even worse, I got to see it "hover" and let's just say that I can skid my kids across the floor with better results...

Hey Nick,

I think this is the biggest culprit to why they don't match up as well as the should.

That's part of it, but if you look at my latest image, you'll see that in order to make the graphics match as closely as possible, it caused the magnets to be stretched far past circular. This tells me that the board...or at the very least the decal is too short.

...but that part isn't helping.

Like I said, they really need to go back to the drawing board, they've really screwed the pooch on this entire thing.

Maybe they couldn't screw past the kick tale and had to made the whole thing shorter?

Who knows?

It gets worse Nick,

This is how it was painted for the "looks-like" model (the one they said was more finalized). See how they match up to the prop!

(Great images you have done BTW)

Here is a very good picture of the lower side of an original stunt board for comparison. I will use it for comparison, when I build my own Hoverboard. This picture is photographed from an excellent viewing angle.

Roland to the rescue again!! Thank you so much for the pic! Roland, if you end up doing a run of magnets you can definitely count me in :lol

Long time lurker finally weighing in on this whole cluster****.

After that video, I can safely confirm that Scott Neitlich is an ******* and an *******. That video didn't make me feel better, it made me angry. I'm an adult, and like many adults I don't enjoy being spoken to in passive aggressive condescending tones over something I've laid some money down on. No one saw the sign, Scott! The actress you hired for SDCC was telling people that the board in the case was 'close to final'. Can anyone from Mattel address the ****ing issues--green velcro, shag footpad strap, proper colors and decal spacing--LENTICULAR DECAL??? If you can't deliver those things, then you are SOL. We will get very, very loud. You made promises, and you should keep them or people will be totally pissed DEMANDING their money back that they don't want to spend on a glorified happy meal toy that costs 120+. I don't care about the Ghostbusters props, I have those already! Argue your point using logic or reason and respond to the questions you are being asked--that's what adults do!

The general selling point in the beginning is/was that this board would be completely accurate. Why else would you bring BOB GALE down with screen used props? Why else would you use AJ Locasio? Why else would you use Michael J. Fox? Are you really going to make asses of youselves and these great people by promising customers an accurate product and then delivering ****? You're really going to hand MJF one of these sub-par boards to sign? Would any of these people approve of the way you are treating loyal fans of this great franchise??

This is not what we paid 120+ for:

Updates on HB from Mattel design team - Topic

If anyone wishes to cancel, contact your CC company and get the charge disputed if it gets that far. If you are serious about cancelling now and they won't let you, file a complaint through BBB and they will deal with matty for you.

Let the games begin.

Autoprops, you should send Roland's image to Mattel again :p
As if they need any more reference...:rolleyes
We shouldn't have to make or buy parts to improve something we payed $120 for.

Yeah I think at this point it's pretty clear that if you keep your pre-order then you will receive a Mattel BTTF Hoverboard and not an exact, accurate BTTF Hoverboard prop replica. Notice the difference.

Between now and when this board ships I will however try and help to make it look more like the prop. Since I'm a designer and not a marketing spin master I can't support how this product was advertised and promised. I can't tell if Scott was lying through his teeth or he is just an overly excited fan and naive Mattel employee. He does seem a bit Hollywood to me which always raises red flags. I completely understand the frustration some of you have.

Haha, I should be expecting a phonecall tomorrow from Sommers about the stuff. Maybe we should all pitch in and do one big group order. :)
