Hi there, I'm new here but I've been making stuff for a few years now. I have been playing around with this replica of the master sword I carved out of wood for the last 7 months and honestly I've ran into a major setback. After constant bondo, sanding and priming I finally got the blade to look smooth and perfect to the game art in Ocarina of Time, but my paint I used turned out to be a major problem. I used an enamel base paint called Premium enamel Crome Aliminum Gloss. The results wer 80% reflective chrome reflectivity and it looks spectacular...... Until it touches anything and then it dulls, the paint can't contact a single thing without it loosing shine. I figured a clear coat would solve this, but as some f you may know and as I certainly do: any and all spray paint clear coat will fill any metallic surface for silver and gold. I've used premium enamel gloss from krylon and Crystal Clear Enamel from rostoloum before, Crystal Clear worked best on my Magneto helmet when I used duplicolor metallic reds, so I figured would be the case for the sword. no Dice, I used several test pieces and they all turned stone grey, BUT THEY SURE ARE GLOSSY!!!! Needles to say I was lead to believe there is a solution to this. Here is my question:
What at kind of paint and clear coat can I use to both keep my sword from harm and still look 80-100% reflective? I have a small set of spray guns and a compressor at my friend's house but I won't be able to get it for at least a few months, and I have all the time in the world. I also have a Preval Spayer to hold me over. I was looking into Duplicolor as they have a set of dark chrome spray paint bundle that includes a top coat, and I was thinking of replacing their dark Chrome with their Regular Chrome, but wasn't sure if that would work. I don't have a lot of money, that's why I used rattle cans from my Ace hardware at the end of my block (it's been really useful being close) and I'd prefer not to spend 100s of dollars on official brand chrome paints, but at this point I don't have any other options. Thank you all for your time!
