Mannequins - home-made v. store-bought

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of just buying mannequins v. taking the time to make them out of PVC and duct tape/bubble wrap.

Obviously, the PVC route is cheaper, but involves some time investment, especially if you want the mannequins articulated. Time is a precious commodity for me lately.

The mannequins at Roxy look great, and at $109, they don't break the bank. But I'm wondering if there's a way to defray the $30+ shipping charges per unit. Anyone know if Roxy ever does free shipping, perhaps if you order multiple mannequins? If not, is there a competitor that does?

Thanks,

I don't have a mannequin yet but would definitely would one when I eventually start the armour side of my build. But wouldnt there be a way you could pick it up from the supplier?

Not many mannequin suppliers in Louisiana. ;)

Roxy is pretty cool, and I have gotten one or two from them, but nope. They charge the shipping charge unless it's local pickup.

I was a little annoyed at first, but then I got the first box in and holy crap it's friggin massive. I know it's gonna sound stupid but it's like they shipped a dead body to you. It's big, heavy and considering it's only costing 30$ to have them send this from NY to you, it's a hell of a deal.

Most other mannequins I have bought go for around 45-60$ shipping, and tend to cost a bit more than roxy does. Might wanna check ebay. Some sellers have diff mannequins for cheaper, so the hit isn't so bad.

Was just looking at getting a mannequin for my suit. OH MY GOSH! They are very pricey.
Hope you get one soon buddy.

I can afford them; price isn't the issue per se. But i never want to pay more for anything than I have to.

I was just hoping that Roxy would spot you the shipping, or at least discount it, if you bought more than one.

But thanks for the good wishes. :)

Yep, still here :)

Any particular style of mannequin you looking for? I have a ton of bookmarks on my other pc for mannequins and mannequin sales.

No, not really. Just a full body male mannequin, medium build, 6'1" if possible, that comes with a stand and isn't in some goofy pose. Even with the shipping, the Roxies seem like a good deal.

Yea, roxy is the best deal around for something like that.

The ones that I was looking at were around the 200-250 mark before shipping. I did get a pretty sweet deal on a clearance red mannequin from them. Haven't figured out exactly what I wanna do with it yet, but hey, it was cheap and worst case scenario I can do a red tornado pretty easy :)

I just bought this one on ebay for $100 + $50 shipping to display my Vader on. Male mannequin muscular AMT-Mannequins - Manikin Tim - eBay (item 220737388114 end time Feb-16-11 15:45:27 PST)
I thought the pose was spot on. I too was on the fence about buying or making. I decided to buy & bite the bullet. If what you found only charges $30 shipping then I would go for it. Heck I'm gonna check them out now because I need one for my Jango, Batman Begins, & soon my IM suit. Thank god my wife is understanding!

The one thing I notice is that my mannequins take up a LOT of space, I made a couple PVC hangers for some other stuff, and I can line them up along the wall without hooging the room.

but conversly mannequins give a much more life like appearance.
