Mangalore rifle build thread - fifth element (finished painting my one)

i'll get things started......
i am leaving my seam line all the way round the gun as i wanted a more screen accurate "stunt" look.
its gonna be rough just like the film guns, hand painted silver the works.

i went over the whole gun trying to get rid of most of the gel coat "marks"

i opened up the barrel of the gun so i could get some expanding foam in there. i wanted to give the metal rods some stability when they were inserted.

just either end has foam the middle is empty.
the guns don't come with a tip , i found that the outer cover of a zinc oxide tape roll fitted perfect over the end of the 50mm cylinder/barrel.

i added some plasticard to this and was stumpped at the hex nut shaped part until i spotted a screwdriver handle would work. i cut one up and added some filler to flatten the sides out, i added a tip from some pump action bottle. i might replace this with a smaller part as its a little big.

i then started bending my 10mm alu stock bar to the required shapes and lengths

these are away getting welded just now
in case you didn't see the junkyard post i also started work on the netted rifle sling part using pipe cleaners n super glue. it will be a static display so i don't need it to be that flexible. it can be bent into what ever shape.

Awesome work Chris,

Did you use a pipe bender on the aluminum? or did you shape it all by hand?

Thoughts on foam filling the other areas where the metal works go in?

Re: Mangalore rifles build thread - fifth element

i just put the alu bar in my vice, put some heat on it from a heat gun and them put a heavy gauge tube about 10 mm over the end and just bent it round, you wont need a pipe bender or anything like that. well you shouldn't.

i felt the top bar would not need any foam as it would be held on place by the gun barrels.

the stock part and small front one i felt definitely needed some "side to side" support.

Re: Mangalore rifles build thread - fifth element

i got my alu pieces back from the shop, they did a great job in my opinion.

i have installed them this afternoon, just got a little bit of filling work around the forward lower one, i knew that was going to be a pain.

pretty happy with the way they turned out, i roughed them up a bit with a wire brush and files to look like they were used and abused.

pics to follow.

oh i alao got my endfield rifle sling in, i'm pretty sure these were what were used on the originals. it looks old and faded, just what i was wanting.

i am a bit lost as to what kind of leather wrap to put on it, pigskin, doe skin or suede even? anyone hazard a guess what it is? leather is not my strong point.

Love the screwdriver handle idea Chris. Looking forward to seeing this finished.

the foam in the ends worked a treat, i would put some in the larger gun barrel if i was doing it again though

Lookin good Chris,

I`m still doing some sanding when I get time. It`s been raining here
for the last 4 days. :angry

What kind of foam filler are you using? I was going to pick up some of
that stuff used to seal window/door frame gaps. Would that work?

kris, its a 2 part system a+b its in liquid form when mixing at first so i you can pour it to and on the areas that need it.

the stuff in a can could work but you wouldn't have much control on where it went. it would probably be quite tricky.
i would definatley try an fill that thick barrel part, i wish i had done now. trying to get a 10mm hole through all three layers in line and not have the gel coat shatter and break is a bit of a task but do able if you take your time.

its very secure and solid feeling, the longer leg is supported with the foam inside.

I was wondering how that was going to work. I`m on the
search for 2 part foam. Apparently the boat stores carry it
for patch repairs.

Anyways, it`s looking good. Keep the posts coming.

Kris

P.S. Hows the Coinprop head coming?. I`m still filling and sanding.

here is the hole tidied up,

i have only done silver on one side at the moment. i used tamiya flat earth and some buff and airbrushed that into the corners etc.. you cant really make out the layers on it in this pic but there is a lot more detail in there.

i still have some black to airbrush on the silver parts and metal bars

pretty pleased how its turning out, scratches and chips done with masking fluid and a fine bush

oh and kris ,i am thinking about getting shares in a bondo company for all the filling i have to do on the stuff i buy in, i would love to buy some zorg stuff. just take it out of the box , paint it, relax.

Sheesh! That looks great! And it came together really quickly! awesome work dude.

Re: Mangalore rifles build thread - fifth element (finished painting my one)

Incredible work and thanks for sharing the method.

For the plate, what about a die stamping set plus vinyl decal?

Re: Mangalore rifles build thread - fifth element (finished painting my one)

i have made up some graphics for a serial plate
