If they really want to destroy Mandrake, why don't they bring in Paul Feig to direct it while they're at it? ...
Sasha is getting to be box office poison at this point it seems, he's like Sandler where he's become a one trick pony. This is some of the worst casting in a long time for a movie. As bad as the Phantom was at least it tried to stay near the source material and had a real actor in the lead.
No he was supposed to be an escape artist and illusionist, sort of like Houdini. The fact that they cast this guy shows they have no intent of making it an accurate or good movie, they just needed someone to work cheap. Then again we haven't had a good Flash Gordon in a while either.
Going by Defenders of the Earth I would have put Timothy Dalton in the role. Looks better now than he did when he was bond. Loved him in Hot Fuzz.

I think Timothy Dalton would have been a great fit for the role if he only had been a bit younger. He is 70 y/o now...
