Man of Steel

dude, slap a compression shirt over that silver stuff. Dying to see how the silver comes through and how the shapes look under a layer of fabric. Great work, very innovative!

Hahaha thanks. I've been reshaping some of the muscles based on how they looked through a polyester shirt I've been using as a test material. It looks pretty cool, but I haven't posted any pics of it because it's not the material that I'm going to use. I don't want to put a bad taste in everyone's mouth for this approach if it doesn't look good through polyester... So I'm waiting until I get a main costume fabric nailed down. But I'll post pics as soon as I can!

My MoS shield showed up today!! Two thumbs up for Pannaus Props. This picture doesn't do it any justice.

In other news... Still haven't found a fabric that I'm happy with. I have another batch coming tomorrow... So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for now.

Here's what I've received so far:

I had a huge score yesterday when the latest shipment of fabric samples showed up. All three of these samples are made of the same material, but are different shades of blue. I'm confident that one of these three will be close to what I'm looking for, and I'm going to start testing them with the raised chain mail soon.

Here's a preview:

Blue 01 - This one looks awesome in the picture, but it's very blue in person. The closest thing I can think of that resembles it is the "G" in Google. I'm not throwing it out yet until I see how it looks with the dark navy chain mail on it. Plus... The first layer of the costume is black, so I'm hoping that might darken it as well.

This color would more than likely result in this color of costume:

Blue 02 - This is the middle blue of the three, and my most hopeful option. This one looks dark in the picture, but is more of a true navy (blue-purplish) in person. Again, it'll get a little darker when the dark chain mail is applied and viewed against the blackness of the first layer.

Blue 03 - This is the darkest of the three blues, but it comes closest to costume shown on screen. It's definitely dark (almost too dark), but I'm hesitating to throw it out, only because it'll guarantee to not be confused with the original Superman costume. I've included a few additional pictures of what I consider to be the most comparable MoS costume that I've seen.

Here's a better shot of the difference between the colors:

First or second. Third is way too dark IMO.
Also I have a question regarding the shield.
Everybody seems to be using the two layer shield with the rubber yellow back.
My question is why?
Using the thicker shield makes it harder for it to conform to your chest and more prone to protruding/fold.
Why not use the 1 layer shield with the yellow fabric backing?
I'm only curious please don't take this the wrong way.

I agree with Venom, but the chain fabric is damn tough to make without some sort of stencil and nobody seems to have the ability to create this effect all over material in order to get a clean look without seems. You almost need to find someone who screens on a huge screener or custom make it. You are right though it is indeed material backing but I guess no one seems to care too much. I have applied the symbol on a under armor shirt and if bends and flows nicely but it does pull on your shirt a little, but this can be fixed with a two layer micro cape.

I would've agreed with you that the third color looked too dark. I was actually leaning towards the middle color because I didn't want it to be too blue. But one of by friends came over on Saturday, and we were fooling around with the metallic muscle suit and stretching each of the fabrics over the muscles. I can tell you without a doubt that the darkest color is the best way to go. I ordered three more yards of it, and will be getting the main costume ready to go once it gets here.

The material is lightweight, and actually gets a little lighter once you stretch it out. It will look very close to the actual movie suit once the puffy paint is applied. The muscles show through really well, but this friend also pointed out that my obliques looked too "robot like" and not enough like a human's anatomy. With that said... I'm redoing the muscle suit (again), fixing the obliques, and trying an entirely different approach with the chest, arms, and shoulders. I'll post pics once it's done.

If you're interested, I got the material from fabric.com, and the search code is 0281365. It's called Poly Lycra Jersey Knit, it's a four way stretch, and the color is midnight.

As for the shield. Well... I can't say too much about it. I like the dimensional difference between the red and yellow, and it should "fold" a little bit because of how it falls over the pecs.

I appreciate the insight and interest though.

I'm going to contact a screen-printer tomorrow to see if they can/will do a large print like this. If not... I'm going to get a laser cut stencil made and do it by hand (not my preferred method). Either way, if you get puffy paint that stretches... The best way to apply it is while the fabric is relaxed. We tested it while it was stretched and it didn't go so well.

Here's a shot of my "business casual" attire from this morning. The reason I'm posting this is because I'm holding my selected colored fabric in my right hand for sake of comparison. It's almost identical, and I think the navy looks good in a decently lit area.

Very cool!! appears the foam and duct tape will be perfect, only what about when it comes to shoulders and bicepts that could get interesting.

I'm anxious to see how they look under the fabric. Good work thus far

Thanks!

Those are the tough parts. Too much muscle and it looks fake... Too little and you don't have the shape of Superman. I'm spending a good bit of time trying to find the best way to make this happen.

What is the color of the heat gear, compression shirt that you purchased at Dick's??

Every shirt I used (three so far) was a black, long sleeve heatgear from under armour. The latest version is also a black UA shirt, but I wanted to use a cutoff because I'm toying the the idea of having chrome sleeves sewn on. That way... I can use my actual musculature, won't have any problems moving, and it'll save a ton of time in trying to develop the perfect shape.

So here's my thought on the arms. Since I can't add fake muscle to the costume and have it look realistic... I asked a relative to sew the chrome sleeves (from the bodysuit) onto my Under Armour cutoff and used my actual muscles.

I'm very happy with how it turned out:

image.jpgimage.jpg

It'll give an awesome metallic look to the arms, and it's almost identical to the abs and obliques.

I'm not sure what to do with the chest yet... But I'm leaning towards just using my regular chest muscles because the symbol is going to cover a good portion of that area. I might just add some chrome tape, but again... It's up in the air.

The next big thing will be to nail down the cape form. I'm going to be at training all this week (away from home)... But I'm going to use this time to solve my screen printing predicament.

Stay tuned...
