Man of Steel (Pre-release)

As for Man Of Steel - I've seen it and I stand by my prediction.
Paul, I know you were critical of the choice of director and of the script which you had read before watching the film, but now that you have seen it can you tell us what you did like in the film? Perhaps you didn't like the movie or maybe you even actively hated it, but as a life long Superman fan there must have been some moments in the movie which you did like, so what were they?

And though comparisons to Christopher Reeve is inevitable and nothing is likely to surpass his portrayal of the character, but as a stand alone portrayal how did you find Henry Cavill's performance in the role of Superman? Also what did you feel about Hans Zimmer's score to the movie?

I have to say, WE all loved Reeve's performance as Supes. It's time to move on. His interpretation is dated. I for one am looking for something new and fresh. If I wanted a Reeve copy, there's the POS film Superman Returns.

I've been pretty excited about this movie until I saw the last TV spot, which shows a woman in fatigues remarking how she thinks Superman, "...is kinda hot."

Up until now, I really liked the look and feel of the trailers, but if the movie is going to be filled with this kind of humor, I'm not so sure...

Here's still hoping...

I'm a HUGE fan of CR's Superman I, and the Donner cut of Superman II (to a lesser extent). I do own Superman Returns, and I enjoy parts of it, but I really look at it like a well made fan film. I was VERY disappointed when I heard about a re-boot, however the trailer has kind of won me over enough to see this. I'm glad it's not just a re-tread. It looks like a cool update on the story. I'm down with seeing it :thumbsup :)

Okay - I'll tred lightly as to not spoil anything -

THE BAD - the biggest problem I had with the movie is it feels like you've seen it all before, either by way of Batman Begins, the ongoing comics and yes - even Superman Returns. If by seeing the trailers you think you have the movie all figured out - you probably do. It's predictability is its biggest downfall in my opinion. Say what you will about the Reeve movies but they added a great many things to the legend - beside being the first Superhero movie to play it the subject matter straight. I'm not mad at this movie as I am Trek - I'm disappointed. This script was rushed out of the HP Laserjet to avoid colliding with the Seigal and Shuster lawsuit and it shows.

THE GOOD - They do more in this movie with the flying, punching and overall destruction than even in the Avengers I think - these Kryptonians beat the hell out of each other. Henry Cavill plays a pretty decent Superman - he's no Christopher Reeve but he's leaps and bounds over Brandon Routh. I still hate Snyder as a director but this movie feels as if he left his signature off in places. It drags in certain parts much like Nolan's other movies but there are some great scenes as well --

See now THAT is a very sober critique.

I was logging on here to specifically ask you this question. I just saw Trek and in my opinion Cumberbatch was the only real highlight. I really hope Man of Steel doesn't leave me feeling the same way.

I like character development over big effects and gimmicks, but I do like an explosion or 100 for good measure.

I am stoked about this movie. My only worry is they show too much of the action. Honestly we have only seen a few seconds extra as mentioned earlier so there is obviously plenty more left to see. I liked what was done to Batman so I'm sure I'll like it alot. Been a fan for a very long time. SuperKent.jpeg

That didn't bother me that much. Superman is supposed to be handsome, not your average-Joe in looks. Plus, in the first Reeve film, he flies by a building full of women, and they were all gaga over him. But putting it in the trailer, I could see how that would put some people off.

Thanks for sharing that Paul, I am glad to hear your thoughts on it especially about the positive aspects. And even without getting into spoilers it was somewhat insightful.

As for the "we have seen it all before", I am guessing you mean the origin story and the overall predictability of the film's plot due to audience being familiar with the two Donner films. I know you and many other feels a origin story on the big screen again is not necessary, but it's something I am strongly for. It was a huge missed opportunity with Superman Returns as it was riding on the continuation of Donner films. I am going to repeat what I posted on the Geek Love thread few months ago. One of the show participants who dressed up as Jimmy Olsen at New York Comic Con wasn't recognized by so many people, in-spite of being hinted at directly who he was friends with.

The last origin movie was in 1978, that's about 34 years ago. And Smallville doesn't really count. People just take it for granted that everyone knows about Superman. Many especially of the modern generation just have an idea about him, unlike Batman and Spider-Man which are more bigger pop culture icons in the last 10 years, thanks to their media presence beyond the comics or animated films. People know those characters and their world much better due to their representation in films right from their origins. So yes, I do feel that a Superman origin film is vital and thankfully we are getting one this year :).

Kids who saw Spider-Man 10 years ago came to know who Mary Jane was, who Harry Osborn was. Now 10 years later those kids probably beyond their teen years will know Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane and Harry Osborn again. Maybe it's unnecessary, but there will be a new generation of 10 year old kids and maybe even adults discovering the Spider-Man films for the first time through the new films.

Similar case with characters from the Batman franchise. Comics and animated series aside, big screen movies have a more worldwide reach and appeal, which has remained untapped for the Superman franchise. Kids and adults who are not even into comics or animated films, might still know Superman, but in comparison to other superhero franchises there are few who would know the supporting characters like who Lois Lane is or who Jor-El is.

This is the time to introduce the world of Superman to the world despite we and thousands being familiar with it in the last 30 years, cause thousands more will be watching a Superman movie for the first time in their lives. Though the box office results matter for the franchise to continue, I want the movie to establish the Superman mythos into the public consciousness to have a bigger cultural impact.

It's unfortunate that it got rushed to avoid the legal problems over losing the rights, but if it was not done now I wonder if it would have ever gotten the reboot treatment at all. Might have remained in the development pit forever.

Look how colorful the suit appears to be here!

I hope it looks like that on screen for a time, at least before he gets down to business against the other Kryptonians...

Snyder used one of his lens filters that he loves, so it tones down the quality of the colors a bit. You can tell in the interview scene that he has the blue lens filter on. Still a cool look though. Just film makers trying to put their own "original" touch on the film.

The "We've seen this all before" has nothing to do with the origin story being revisited - it has to do with specific moments or scenes transplanted from other super-hero films - Batman begins lends a whole lot to -- "the journey", they even picked from the fruit of Smallville. I did like the Marvel spin of "We can't trust a guy who can do all of these fantastic things" - but for some reason ( and this may be because I've always liked people cheering Superman's arrival like messiah ) it just didnt fit in Superman.

and I understand the need to repackage Superman for this generation - but i also recognize change for change sake. Remember everyone here fell in love with Superman, a character from 1938, without suit changes (artistic flare aside) or any huge modifications to character - which I'm not saying Man of Steel is guilty of ( unlike Star Trek).

There are some screenworthy scenes in MOS - I'm sure for some they will make up for any problems the script has. I'll put it like this - I didn't leave the screening mad or insulted like I did with Mess Trek - I only hope a director comes along who can really. give these actors something to do.

Mow I'm going back to look at Amanda Bynes's ta-tas on twitter.speaking of mess...not her domes - just what she's doing
