Making a mold of an M38 scope

So I've recently purchased some pewter ingots, mold max 60 and an electric melting pot. I know people have made molds of M19;s and other scopes but because of the value of these things I'm afraid to ruin it. So my question is, are these scopes usually sealed? Will I destroy it by making a mold of it?

I think maybe doing a hand brushed detail layer or two first would be better. This way any small seams that aren't completely sealed won't get filled by doing a pour over method. The only real problem areas I could imagine would be the lenses, but you could always pop them out, create a quick "plug" to cap them off and mold that. Then possibly most and cast the lenses too to have a nice little replica.

Depends on what you want to do with it, I suppose. Do you want it to be one solid chunk of pewter or do something a little more complicated, like having areas with clear lenses? I don't think the Mold Max would do anything to ruin it, it's fairly easy to work with, but if you're planning the latter, I hope your skills at disassembling things and putting them together is up to snuff. That would be my only concern about your scope coming to any damage.

Thank you for the reply. Just a solid chunk for now, as I really don't want to disassemble it. The consensus seems to be that it shouldnt let the silicone leak in so Im going to give it a shot. $8 hours later I should have a decent mold.

Ive moulded and cast many scopes including the M19 and M38. The lens itself I just cover with a carefully applied strip of tape. You can clay in any crevices. One other trick is I lightly coat everything with Vaseline then hit it with a heat gun. This gives a super protective coat while acting a super mould release when pulling the master from the silicone. Keep in mind however if your brushing the silicone vs pouring the Vaseline will show those brush marks and end up in the mould itself.
