Vallejo has several washes already premixed, but if your dealer doesn't stock them you could always use what you have. In a mixing cup, put in a drop of black and two drops of thinner, and paint it on a painted test piece to see how it flows and dries. If it looks too dark, add in more thinner, too light more black. If you want a grimier look, mix in some rust colours. Experiment.

If it pebbles on the surface add a drop of dish soap. It helps break surface tension and will allow the wash to flatten out instead of forming droplets.

If using acrylic paint, I sometimes thin it with Pledge Floor Care (formerly known as Future). Since it's already a clear acrylic, it can dilute the paint without breaking up the pigment and resulting in a grainy finish.

Works well for me.

Thanks for great tips guys!

Can I also ask, should I put on a clear coat over my base paint, before doing the wash?

Washes work better over a gloss finish. Otherwise the wash would just "absorb" into a flat finish. Gloss coat, apply wash, seal with a dull coat.

I make my own washes in ebay bough dropper bottles. I mix Vallejo Model Air and thinner, maybe a 2:3 ratio? And 3-5 drops of liquid detergent and a few of Airbrush Flow Improver. Works like charm

For a Falcon model? Don't do it! ILM didn't use dark washes on the originals!

Hello. When it comes to washes here are my tools. I keep it simple. Acrylic paint and brushes are from my local art supply store. I mix it in a big plastic container with a cover that has a tight seal so I can store it. I put it in the refrigerator between uses to keep it from molding. I mix enough to see me through whatever project I am working on. Lastly, I just slop it on. Remember, you can get some interesting effects by airbrushing over the wash.

Good luck and have fun;

I'm almost the same as Scudman. I paint with enamels so I mix my own acrylic washes with water a couple drops of soap. I don't clear my paint before hand as I plan for and make use of the staining effect.
