Majora's Mask

... Most people who make these masks seem to go big on them...

I know mine ended up fairly large.:lol It'd an odd thing this mask, in-game, because it seems to re-scale itself to whatever the occasion. It's large on the Skull Kid, it's small for the Mask Salesman, it's large for when Link fights it, it's small when the dream child wears it. It's a very odd thing.

When I set about to making mine, I went with scaling it from how it looked on the Skull Kid to an adult size. Considering it's origins from MM, I just figured it was an adult size if it was used for hexing rituals. Also, should it come to life and fight me at any point, I won't be disappointed by its size.:p

Looks fantastic! Super sharp cast, and I am very excited by the two-sided detail. This has got to be up there with my favorite sculpts of this mask!

I have a thought, if I may be so bold...I've always favored the look of Majora's Mask with the horns slightly curved, all slightly different lengths, and maybe even less pointy. I feel like it fits better with the rounded, organic shapes of the face. Not to disparage your horn choice at all - far from it! I was just wondering - for my own objective and selfish reasons - if you had considered making an alternate set of horns, since the mask is a totally separate piece and it'd be easy to use a different set if you wanted a different version of the mask.

Here are a few examples of the style I'm picturing:

Even the official Skull Kid art shows the horns curved and different lengths, though still pointy:

Just an idea, take it or leave it as you see fit!

You're not alone; my sentiments, exactly. In this piece of early art, the second horn of each side is longer than the rest, and I always thought that made it look more shamanistic, for whatever reason.

Alas, not a lot of people much care for that and tend to favor the more "traditional" look (not that that's a bad thing). For me, I'd rather have what the art more or less intended...and I sorta do.;)

Over the past few days I've been working non-stop to get the mold finished. For the mother mold, I decided to use some plasti-paste that I had laying around, and it worked great.

With the mold finished and cleaned, I went ahead and made the first cast with Smooth-On 320 that I pigmented a muddy brown to give it a good base color.
Pouring the resin itself was actually much easier than I expected, and the first cast came out great.

Now, it would have been faster to do a one-piece slush-cast mold of just the outside of the mask, but the extra work was completely worth it.
The Rebound 25 kept the wood detail perfectly on both sides of the mask, and I'm REALLY excited about getting to paint and weather it!

Here's a comparison with the master on the right:

Been following your progress on your Pixelbash Facebook (Dom Charland) and I can't wait to see the kit in the junkyard!

I had the same thought. I'm definitely thinking about offering a second set of horns that are more "toothy" and curved.

I actually modeled the final spikes to be much more organic than the original model pics I've posted, so the final pieces are all slightly different sizes. The idea is to be able to re-order them however you like when assembling the mask (aside from the two top horns, which I've made sliiiightly longer than the rest). :)

Speaking of the spikes, I decided to use the leftover Rebound and plasti-paste from the main mold to mold them. Plasti-paste is WAY cleaner and more convenient to use than fiberglass, but it sure does look gross:

I just made a one-piece shell over each spike, so if there are any issues with the silicone locking in place I'll probably just cut them in half with the bandsaw.
I should be able to demold them and do the first run of spikes in a couple of hours :D

Delighted to hear it! I can't wait to see how both sets of horns turn out. :)

Good job, Mr. Greene. Its beautiful!

Yeah I remember yours. You made yours with light up eyes, right? That was real neat. I don't think I've seen any other MM with light up eyes before.

Yep, light up eyes and horns that can rattle.

Having rattling horns is a ridiculously good idea.
I actually found some phosphorescent paint that I want to strategically blend into the eyes. We'll see how well that works here in a bit I suppose.

I'm using basic acrylic paints and a combination of dry-brushing and color washes to get the old, chipped, and worn look that any ancient relic should have.
I don't want to ruin the surprise, so here's a teaser of how the spikes are looking after just a couple of passes of browns:

You've really met with a terrible fate haven't you? This is amazing. Great work. I love the wood grain. Cant wait for the final reveal!

Gorgeous. The faux-wood showing through the colored paint is super convincing, great job on that under-painting!

After a solid day of painting, the mask is turning out exactly the way I want it.

It's hard to describe how happy I am with it so far, so I hope these photos do it justice:

I'm doing a few more weathering passes on it now that it's assembled, and then I get to paint the inside and attach the back rim. Just in time for the release day.

(looks like the mask is excited too)
