Hey everyone, i'd thought i'd start a topic on magical props, spell books, potion bottles etc as i haven't seen a thread just specifcally for those.

Here i have uploaded some pictures from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" the tv-movie, with her original spellbook.
and pictures of the spellbook from "Hocus Pocus"

and here are all the pictures from Sabrina the teenage witch (still getting used to this attachment stuff XD) Please comment, post other pictures of various magical tomes and mystical objects, post pics of your replica's/creations.

Also, it might be nice if those of you who know how can offer advice/tutorials on making props like this etc :) Happy viewing commenting etc :)

I don't know EXACTLY who did the Hocus Pocus Book however i found this on IMDB -

ART DEPARTMENT
Russell Bobbitt .... property master
William Boyd .... construction foreman
Philip Chapnick .... assistant props
Mike Combs .... greens foreman
Bruce Di Valerio .... general construction foreman
Cal DiValerio .... construction coordinator
Ray Fisher .... lead man: Salem, MA
Bruce Fuselier .... set dresser
Patricia Garrity .... buyer (as Patti Garrity)
Paul W. Gorfine .... stand-by scenic
Martha Johnston .... set designer
Robin A. Linn .... sculptor
Fred Lucky .... storyboard illustrator
James P. Meehan .... on-set dresser
Laura Molina .... props

So i'm guessing it may be one of them :)

Howdy yall,

I had a go at making the pages from the Hocus Pocus book a while ago, since then I've changed computers and don't have the full size pages anymore, but here's some pictures I took. I hadn't 'aged' the graphics by this point :confused

The font is called 'Killigrew'.

One final thing more and all is done!

I found the actual wording for most of the pages. Disney's prop department only did a few of their own pages :) The rest is taken from classical literature and esoteric books. And stuff.

Hocus Pocus Spellbook Texts:

Old Nick (Pumetan and Satan (Actual Header "Appearance of Satan" Actual Footer "Dis-something and Satan")):
History of the Devil - Paul Carus

Old Nick is a black-looking fellow at best,
Ay, e’en when he's pleased; but never before
Had he looked so black As on seeing his sack
Thus cut into slits on the Red Sea shore.

Caused the pots to shuffle:

Kalevala the Land of Heroes volume 2 - Charles Frederick Rideal

Then the aged Vainamoinen,
He the great primeval sorcerer,
Hastened alder-sticks to cut him,
And arranged the sticks in order,
And began the lots to shuffle,
With his fingers to arrange them,
And he spoke the words which follow,
And in words like these expressed him :
" Leave I ask of the Creator,
Seek an answer that misleads not

Tell me, signs of the Creator,
Lots of Jumala, instruct me,

Formulas:
Babylonian Oil Magic in the Talmud and in the Later Jewish Literature - Samuel Daiches

The Babylonian Magick Text, here is an incantation:
Bright oil, pure oil, shining oil,
the purifying oil of the gods,
oil which softens the sinews of man.
With the oil of incantation of Ea,
With the oil of incantation of Marduk,
I have made thee drip;
with the oil of softening which Ea has given for soothing I have anointed thee;
the oil of life I have put on thee.

Powers of Witchcraft:
Magic, Witchcraft, and Ghosts in the Greek and Roman Worlds: A Sourcebook - Daniel Ogden

"If I command the moon, it will come down; and if I wish to withhold the day, night will linger over my head; and again, if I wish to embark on the sea, I need no ship, and if I wish to fly through the air, I am free from my weight."

Paragraph beneath the Cat Spell:
Prayer known as: Trailokya-Vijaya

Hring, may the Adya protect my head;
Shring, may Kali protect my face;
Kring, may the Supreme Shakti protect my heart;
May She Who is the Supreme of the Supreme protect my throat

Excruciating Punishments, Second Paragraph:
Ecclesiasticus, Chapter 39
Old Testament

There be spirits that are created for vengeance, which in their fury lay on sore strokes; in the time of destruction they pour out their force, and appease the wrath of him that made them.

Posession/Lycanthropy Page:
The Duchess of Malfi - John Webster

In those that are possess'd with't there o'erflows
Such melancholy humour, they imagine
Themselves to be transformed into wolves;
Steal forth to churchyards in the dead of night,
And dig dead bodies up

Listen, O Blood:
The Kalevala - Elias Lönnrot

Listen, O blood, instead of flowing
instead of pouring forth thy warm stream
Stop, O blood, like a wall, stope like a hedge.
Stop like a reef in the sea: like stiff sedge in the moss,
like a boulder in the field, like the pine in the wood.

Incantation for Sickness:
Beltane Spell for Warding off Disease - Gerina Dunwich

Ofano, Oblamo, Ospergo, Hola Noa, Massa Lux Beff, Clemati, Adonai, Cleona, Florit, Pax Sax Sarax, Afa Afaca Nostra, Cerum Heaium, Lada Frium.

The witches brew page is taken from Macbeth.

***Alot of the texts have passages before and after them, so if you want to read the complete wording (mind you, some of them are Epic poems and plays) google and copy/paste are your friends :)***

ive been getting serious about making a Lovecraft necronomicon, i know how to bind books, and age them, i just dont know how to make a good cover that will last a long time and woud be cheap. any suggestions?

I've got a Necronomicon project, based on the Owlswick Press version that I'm planning to bind with a rawhide deerskin to look like you know what kind of skin... It's sewn in signatures with 5 cords to bind them together for the raised ribs on the spine. I've been adding notes that the various viewers of the tome have written in the page margins. Rawhide is pretty thick (much thicker than vellum) and I am still working on how to get it flexible for the cover hinge without having it get too soft, or break.

The other option that I use for Indy Grail diaries and other smaller books is to pick up a cheap second-hand leather coat, handbag, whatever at a used goods store and get out the scissors.

Good luck.

Just watched Hocus Pocus, and was wondering whether the good folks of RPF had taken a crack at the spell book. Great set of references for the pages.

Unrelated point, but in "You must tap your heels together three times, and think to yourself...Thier's no Place like home.", it needs to be "there's". "Thier's" isn't even a real word.
