Macross and Robotech model kits

Hey folks,

I have a few older IMAI Macross model kits that I built when I was a teen, and recently have thought about giving them a renovation job, i.e. giving them a new, better (not that tough, I guess) paint job.

Anyway, before I start (which might take a while *cough*), I´d love to see what you talented folks on this board probably have to show off.

To fill the thread with a bit of interesting info, here´s a link to a site that has a pretty comprehensive list of what´s out there.

MW:Models

I have the Destroid Monster, the Destroid Phalanx and IIRC the Destroid Spartan, all great Mecha designs, IMO.

I also have a few unbuilt kits that I might tackle, I just love and loved the non-conformist design of those mechas. You just can´t beat four storey high fighting machines...

So, post away, I am really curious what´s still around :)

I've actually just started getting into Macross from other Mecha kits (SRW, Gundam, FSS) Just picked up a launch arm from DYRL and the atmospheric booster. I'm hoping to have the Launch arm finished by end of summer, but ever since I found this forum, my love of mecha kits has waned into replicas and props:lol

I was lucky enough last week though, to find a seller on craigslist selling a 1/72 Imai regult for $10 aside from that most of my kits are more recent items such as the Bandai F kits and Hasegawa's. Hopefully I can start adding to this post with some pics in a few weeks. Are you a member over there at MW too ManfromNaboo?

Ah, these take me back. I remember the Arii ones being for sale here in the UK the mid 80's. Bought a load of them, built them up and put them on a shelf. Ended up being binned many years later as i had nowhere to display them and i had moved on to other things.

I remember the crisp detailing and ease of assembley, great stuff.

I remember some smaller ones i had in the 80s. they came with suction cups so you could stick them to windows to make them fly. they weren't super articulated but nice. Actually a super veritech is how i cut my thumb open for my first stitches lol. i used to have a ton of macross models but they're way too expensive for the most part these days since its popular. That and harmony gold is messing with importing them. Only robotech thing i have is a new battlepod figure.

What ?! Not even a few views ?! C´mon guys !!!
I tried to view this when it was posted, but the page never loaded! I noticed it had no views and thought it was weird. I built a bunch of Robotech (not Macross) models in the 80's, but they're all gone now:cry I hope someone does post some pics. I love Robotech! The entire Macross saga of Robotech is available to watch on stagevu and I watched it earlier this year. Such a great show, and it could be a great movie trilogy as long as Michael Bay doesn't get his hands on it...:wacko

I actually just got the entire series in the Protoculture collection and Tommy Yune was at the anime con promoting new stuff. I think there is another movie coming out. i know they want to do a live action film

I just musta missed this thread. I actually heard about the RPF on Macrossworld.

I've got a few of the Moscato kits finished, some other odds and ends and I'm slowly working on Salzo's 1/72 V1 Monster. I'll try to get a few shots up in a day or two.

Hadn't seen those pics on Macrossworld in a long time (I usually go straight to the forum), and forgot about some of my resin kits being on there from about 10 years ago.

The finished kits pics for these models are mine:

Club-M 1/48 Ultimate Strike VF-1S

Club-M 1/72 VT-1

Yellow Submarine 1/100 VF-4

I've had many of the original Imai, Arii, and Bandai kits. They were fun for their day, but tended to lack a bit in the accuracy department. The Hasegawa kits from the last 10 years are lightyears beyond in that respect, but don't have the fun toy value of the oldies.

I don't remember who made the kits i got back in the 80s. I remember getting them at Kb in the mall (or it was another store not sure). I know i never got alot of them cause my folks thought 5.00 each was expensive lol

I started uploading some stuff to an album here on the site, lets see if I get these linked right. Here are a few things.

My only real finished model is an Imai transforming VF-1S Valkyrie that I added some super booster parts to the make it a Super Valkyrie (and kept the transforming part intact). Unfortunately, it is falling apart these days. So I need to do a new one. As such, I don't really have any decent shots of it.

I've also got a few of the Hasegawa Valks in my stash, as well as a couple Imai kits from Mospeada (in Monogram GoBots packaging). One day those will get built. I just haven't gotten in the right mood to do so yet.

One thing I will say about those old Imai Valkyries, they are nice and can still be done up into great models. But, the attachment point to place the legs in jet and GERWALK mode needs to be beefed up BIG time as they break WAY too easily. I've had those things go bad so many times. For the next one, I'll either scratch a more robust piece or do some serious reinforcement.

And if you aren't a member of that forum ManfromNaboo, you might consider joining Macrossworld, and then search for model threads by a couple members like Cool8or, WMCheng, and ack, I'm drawing a blank on his screen name, I can see his avatar, anyway, there's another guy on there I see on Starshipmodeler all the time that builds incredible models in days. If you aren't a member you can't browse user posted images. If you are looking for inspiration, there are some truly fantastic works of art floating around there.

I love these...look forward to seeing what you do with it. I also like the robotech defenders too:

I still have my Robotech Factory in storage I need to finish

Guys, this is so wonderful :cry

Thanks for sharing !!!

Ghadrak, what does "Salzo" mean ?! You don´t want to tell me that Mike made a kit of the Destroid Monster ?!

In the next few days I´m going to pick up my old kits and take a few pics. My Destroid Phalanx might be good enough to show, the other ones are... well... not so good lookin´. A 12 year old´s paint job, you know...

I still have a few unbuilt kits, like a Macross Garage in I think 1/100 scale, with a Valkyrie fighter.

EDIT : WOW, propologist, psychic RPF connection at work, I guess !!! :lol :lol :lol That´s exactly what I have, with the huge blue Valkyrie fighter!

Yeah, Revell/Ceji, have a few of those Mospeada Riders and the Robotech mechs as well, now that you mention them! And I loved the box fotos, especially when they showed the Mechs in different terrains !!!

I always wanted one of the transforming kits, and was hugely disappointed when all the model shops only had the static kits. But a time will come when I will finally own a verifighter ;)

EDIT : Okay, do NOT go here if you can´t stand bad stories. Wow, glad that I never read that comic:

I actually picked up one of those defenders at a model show we used to have locally before the model building group vanished. cost me a pretty penny too.

Pretty penny? I have no idea what those kits go for these days?!

I bought a Mecha a few years ago and it cost me about 90 US-$, I know that the Gundam kits are pretty expensive, especially the large scale ones. You gotta love large scale. I have one of those larger Gundams that is actually pretty much assembled but needs some assembly, like the sword and shield and some additional armour.

Jeez, I´m about to hop in the car and get those kits!!! Ah, sometimes it´s great to revisit stuff that you haven´t seen in a long time :)

Ghadrack I love the interior work you've done on the Zentraedi.
I had one of those models when I was a fresh faced naive pup to modelling. It was actually the first kit I recall buying and with utter pride and determination I endeavoured to paint it like a pro. It was godawful - painted on the sprue with lashings of thick red enamel paint, and I've always meant to get another kit and revisit it with a little more knowledge and skill - it's such a great design.

Ah, so you know my pain :lol

Now seems to be a good time to ask how to get rid of enamel paint? I´ll try the usual first, with paint thinner and probably some light acetone and of course sanding, but if anyone knows a better method that works without potentially melting the plastic...

Well it was a long long time ago but I managed to get rid of my enamel paint problem by losing the model, or maybe my parents did, figuring it was such a hideous paint job it might affect my growth and development if it were still kicking around as i grew up :D

I've heard brake fluid is one way to go for styrene kits, with the old test first caveat. That said I have used brake fluid to assist in the paint removal from a Vader helmet and it worked well. I did use it tentatively though.
