M40 - 1942 Stormtrooper Scope - Value?

I got my M38 on Ebay for about $60 a few years ago. I know it's not exactly the same but it's pretty close

The prices have gone up, but not as high as for the M19.

Of course it´s worth is always that what someone is willing topay, but between 100-200 is not the badest guess.

The M38 A2 (and it´s matching numbers) are wrong (shape), and so noticeable cheaper.

The M19 is very expensive as Slave1pilot has posted. Several hundred dollars. It is the most sought after scope.

The M38 is the next best scope you can use which I believe looks just like a M40. I picked on up on the ebay awhile back in the range of $50-ish. You might be able to pick it up for a little more or less, depending you is watching the auction.

Then you get into the M38A2. The is a little different than the M38 or M40. They have a flat spot around the center of the scope. Which if you look at the old Kenner now Hasbro toy stormtrooper blaster, the scope looks like it was designed off an M38A2, but I don't know if there are any pics of a screen blaster with a M38A2.

The M38A2 should be in the same $50 price range, just depends who is bidding.

Good Luck.

Edit: Well, these guys are saying the price has gone up. I bought my M38 in very good condition, about a year ago for around $50.00. My advice is look under WW2 auctions without Star Wars references in the listing, because Star Wars fans seem to be willing to pay more for them, than WW2 peeps.

I'm with Lichtbringer; $100-$200 depending on condition and whether it has it's original bolts. Some in good condition have recently gone for more but it's a bit of a fluke and I wouldn't expect for it to go above $250 unless it was pretty much perfect.

EDIT: Just to clarify I paid £20 for my 1943 M38 about four months ago but this again is likely a fluke. Also I would echo Vader1's advice if you are after one; try more obscure search terms and don't search under Star Wars.

The M38 is the most used scope on the E-11, not the M19 - but the M19 is needed for all ESB DL-44 variants (Han Solo at Hoth, Han Solo at Bespin, Luke Skywalkers).

The M40 looks similar to the M38, but could be probably a lot cheaper, as it is not so well known.

Prices vary depending on where you find it and how many other Star Wars fans you have to fight off... I have not paid more than $50 for any scope except the M19 that I paid I believe $120 for... But I have seen M19's go for close to $500 and even seen M38A2's go for $75+ it's all a roll of the dice...

I would say with the right interest you can get $75+ for a M40, or with no interest it might sell for $25...

For comparison, the M40 is the same casting as the M38 so short of the writing on the front lens it's identical for all purposes in this hobby...

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that there were so many different scopes that related to Star Wars.

THAT is a nice comparison picture! Thanks for posting, exoray! :eek:thumbsup
I´ve seen, owned or held all of them but never had a chance to see them all together!

I got my M19 and deactivated sterling for 500 total. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Did all the M38-A2s come with the little light thing on top??

Yes that was the -A2 designation, I would say from what I have seen about half of the ones out on the market actually have the light system band intact like mine above, it's honestly the only reason I picked that one up, just a complete scope example to round out the collection... It's a cheap alternative to the real deals, and with a little Bondo and time the machined relief can be filled in and it will be prime looking alternative...

Now I'm going to have to go check my rifle out. I totally forget which version I did. I know it's not the one with the M19 or the counter on it.

So what exactly does it do??

The one E11 we have all seen with the lit up scope and amazing counter has one but I did not quite understand how it worked. I know he added a red lens but what exactly does it do.

Thanks

I'm pretty lost in regards to your question as a whole, the original purpose of the -A2 revision was to provide a source of light inside the scope for better viewing in low light situations...

Ah, you mean Erv's. By putting the red light in the top it caused refraction on the etchings in the sight projecting that image back (in red) to the viewers eye. It's pretty much the way red dot sights work. The M38A2 would be brilliant for this as everything is pretty much done for you due to the presence of the light source as exoray explained.

That's the answer I was looking for.

I'm suprised that has not been used on more E11 replicas.

Thanks for clarifying

I just got an M47A2 (looks identical to the M38A2 posted above). Does anyone know the thread & bolt size needed for these? The resin scope I've got has the same size bolt, but the threads are different, so they don't work. I was hoping for an easy upgrade, but looks like I'll have to go source some new bolts.

Thanks,
Magnoli
