Lukes X-Wing Hero Helmet? Looking for info

First question, did Luke have a hero style x-wing helmet made from a real APH6 helmet and not a vac'd one?

Second, does anybody have any good links to photos of his helmet? I am not having much luck.

Hi Bill.
Definitely not. All the x-wing helmets used were vac formed. :thumbsup

.

Exactly, the only diference between Heros and Stunts was the paintjob. All the Heros had (and have) a diferent paintjob, and all Stunts had just a few details like the blue wings on the sides, but they all were plain white. Also the visors, Hero = Amber, Stunt = Smoked.

Correct me if I'm wrong :thumbsup

Also, the hero's (luke, biggs, wedge, gold leader, etc..) had different internal guts and mics.
The y-wing helmets or background helmets were just vac-formed shells with star foam inside.

Starwarshelmets.com has some excellent paint ups of Luke's helmet.

You guys are killing me. I was hoping not to cut my new helmet in half to vac it. But, thanks for the info!

Anybody have any good photos of the real thing?

That site also has some really good pictures of two real "stunt" helmets, and may be one or two pics of one of Luke's production-used helmets, but I am not qualified to say if that particular helmet actually was on screen or not. The actual paint job differs slightly between them.

There are a couple of screencap threads in the prop forum that might have HD screencaps of the helmet, and there is also The Star Wars Archives forum which has a great collection of Star Wars images production and promotional pictures in varying quality.

If you want to buy a helmet:
All licensed helmets for sale so far have been kid-sized.
eFX is working on a licensed 1:1 Luke X-wing helmet, but I don't know when it is supposed to be available.

For information about kits, search the forum! You could also check out JediMickey's run over at Rebel Legion's forum. I don't think it has got much attention here yet.

You don't have to. You would have to add the mohawk anyway, and your real helmet does not have it. There are also details on the APH-6B that are filled in on the X-wing helmet -- and the edge trim of the particular APH-6B helmet that Lucasfilm used is molded into the X-wing helmet shell's shape!
I would try building a rig to hold the helmet so that it can be cast in halves, build up the mohawk and other details roughly with removable clay and cast that. Then cast your positive molds in ultracal (or other durable type of plaster) and perfect the details by carving away plaster from those molds.

Do NOT cut your helmet! You must take some fiberglass moulds of it, modify them, and then vacummform these. The helmet should be modified so cutting your helmet is not the best way! :confused

Kind of what I was thinking but, wanted other ideas.

After searching for a good part of a year, I decided to purchase a kit from JediMickey from the Rebel Legion. He will be doing a run soon.

And there are still people out there who will tell you that the APH-6 is the only way to be screen accurate. Not sure where that comes from.

You're correct, it should be the APH-6B, not the APH-6 :lol

The only way to be screen accurate is with the screen used item or, in this case, with the object it comes from (Like Graflex is for the Luke saber). If you don't use the APH-6B as a base, then, you're not screen accurate IMO :thumbsup

But that's what I mean. Just a few posts back it says that the SA stuff is just vacuformed imitations. This is all very confusing for someone looking to get into the orange.

Thanks for the links guys. I had some photos but, those are new to me! I am going to try and do a x-wing and Tie helmet.

The screen-accurate stuff and all fan-made helmets (that I have heard of) are casts off the APH-6B.
To be more precise, the APH-6B should be size "Large". Also, there are APH-6 helmets with a APH-6 visor cover plus additional straight "ram's-horns" (as opposed to curved) but they are also not ascreen-accurate.
A real helmet may also have rivets in not screen-accurate locations - which is another reason for making an intermediate cast and adjusting that.

I have been working on my X-wing Pilot helmet for sometime now. I got an APH6B on ebay, pulled it apart. I then cut up a Jedimickey helmet for the mohawk and horns. Still got a bit of work to go, and yes it is a little off centre, but here is my progress to date.
