UP contacted me about this this morning. I'm up for it. If you guys want to figure out how you want it handled, I'm flexible.

UP contacted me about this this morning. I'm up for it. If you guys want to figure out how you want it handled, I'm flexible.

I asked about what the original story was in another Luke V2 thread because for a plaque I would want it correct. This is often referred to as the stunt saber but that can not be right as it is the saber he has in every scene except the cut seen and Vader talk seen, both done later. Ironically in the actual film Luke never touches the Hero saber.

So:

Was is just a stunt prop??? Hard to believe.

Was it supposed to be one Luke built out of spare parts in Ben's hutt??? Also weird.

What exactly was the deal with this thing because it literally is the most beat up saber in the OT and it's supposed to be the newest???

Did they say, "screw it no one will notice." ??? Again hard to believe.

I would want the plaque to say what it actually was. I am also taking this opportunity to ask again what the deal is with this thing.

I've always thought that their rationale for using that saber in the movie was something like: "- We need a lightsaber that looks like that of a Jedi Knight (Master). - Well, let's use one of the props used by Obi-Wan (since he was the only Jedi Master before Luke). - Ok, we have these ones, which one do you think is better? - Let's use that one which is all beat-up! It looks like a weapon that has been used in actual battle! it will make Luke look more like a Jedi Knight :D"

Then, for some reason, someone thought that this V2 prop was not appropriate for the close ups, so they built the idealized 'Hero' version.

Well, that's my thought :D

Edit:
In the end, for me this recreated Starkiller V2 is just Luke Skywalker's lightsaber from Episode VI. I don't even think they intentionally created several props for a movie. Who would have thought that 32 years later there would be a group of crazy folks (that's us) obsessed with the different versions of the props used? hahaha but I feel so proud to be obsessed with this.

Hero v.s. stunt prop has less to do with screen time and more to do with proximity to the camera, and practical fx.
Yes, it was a redressed stunt prop of Obi Wan's saber from the first film.

There are production reasons the film makers used a leftover stunt prop, i.e. time and budget.

Gaahhhhhh. Can't. Wait. For. Second. Run.

Re: Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber- based on the new info from SWCA (UPDATE PG 12)

My theory:

Lucas - "OK guys, Luke is a Jedi Knight this time around. He built his own laser sword using Obi Wan's as a reference."

Prop crew - "Ok. We don't have Ben Kenobi's anymore so let's use that old one we were using when we were going to make them spin. Lolz remember that?"

Lucas - "I like it. I also need one to use for a close up. Make something that looks like it, only more detailed and snazzy with buttons and lights that the audience can see"

Prop crew - "Ok"

^ this. But with the exception that I don't give Lucas that much credit. I seem to remember someone mentioning an early preproduction shot of luke on the set of ROTJ with a graflex saber. I'm betting one of the crew were like, "wait didn't he lose that one when he got his hand chopped off?" and Lucas was probably like, "yeah you're right, I guess he needs a new one.." followed by what you just said.

Hahaha and somehow J.J. lost track of that very same fact (lol)

Re: Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber- based on the new info from SWCA (UPDATE PG 12)

It turns out that the same woman did the continuity/script supervisor position on ESB and ROTJ.

Her IMDB page:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0542911/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cr412

It's almost a certainty that it wasn't left to chance or that "nobody would notice" the saber change. Continuity people live and die (professionally) based on this very kind of thing.

In all probability, it was a motivated decision based on Luke's back story.

My two credits...

There was a deleted scene filmed where Luke builds his new saber in a cave, so it was in the shooting schedule early on. The preproduction shot of Luke you speak of was an early costume test and the graflex saber was likely a stand in. I think Mark Hamil was probably very used to the V2 having practiced fencing with Bob Anderson using it, and naturally campaigned for its heavy use in filming. There are rumors that Mark ended up with the V2 when filming wrapped on Jedi.

I had thought the cave scene was one of the very last pickup shots for the movie? It was done using the flashing LED saber that didn't exist during the filming of the rest of the movie. That "hero" saber was a new prettier prop based on the V2 and was even modified with a new control box after the landing platform inset shot of Vader holding it (if they're even the same prop).

Re: Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber- based on the new info from SWCA (UPDATE PG 12)

All that could be true, I misspoke and meant to say in the script. It's interesting that Mark Hamil doesn't remember filming the scene, as in this video by jdebord.

Perhaps Mark was not available on the day of the shoot, had already absconded with the V2, or it was filmed newly for the bluray, I don't know, I haven't seen the footage myself.
Does the scene show the sliding control board with the circuit greeblies underneath, and the lighted leds?

I seem to remember Antony Daniels saying that there was a cave scene filmed in the deserts of Arizona, It could have been a second unit establishing shot for the later cave scene.

there is also a behind the scenes clip of ep3 where they are showing the stunt sabers in a box, george asks one of the crew " which saber is obiwans"

i dont believe he could tell the difference

Re: Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber- based on the new info from SWCA (UPDATE PG 12)

Everyone who had paid by yesterday has their Saber in the post at this point.

For everyone else, there will be a slight delay in mailing your sabers because I need to cut and face another 20 or so steel brods

did i make the dead line? i noticed its not marked paid by my name?

Re: Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber- based on the new info from SWCA (UPDATE PG 12)

I hadn't seen that, no. Thanks!
That's the hero saber I was thinking of. ...and there's the pickup shot Daniels was talking about.

Re: Luke ROTJ V2 lightsaber- based on the new info from SWCA (UPDATE PG 12)

Don't forget - the Yuma saber was lathed before they turned one into a close-up piece.
