Luke ROTJ V2 clamp info needed

I'm making a replica V2 saber and was wondering what holds the graflex clamp together if there was no lever?
How can a metal rod or nail hold the clamp together if its not threaded?
Also, does anyone know if the orignal graflex clamp lever was ever there at any time during filming?

Thanks,

Keith.

You pinch the clamp together to the tightness you want, then you put the nail through the hole and bend it. The head of the nail keeps the nail locked in place on one side, and the bend keeps it locked in place on the other. Its a simple concept but its hard to explain :confused
I'll try an example with a simple illustation:
o|-|d
The o in the example represtents the nail head, and the d represents the bend. The - represents the nail shaft and the | represents the clamp sides. The o and d form a kind of U shape that holds the two clamp sides together if that makes any sense.
