As I was digging through some photos back in May I came across this gem. Check out the clamp position. Looks like both positions were used during filming, even if just one made it into the final cut. Anyway, I thought it was interesting and thought I'd share.

Nice find ... yet that's an awkward place to keep their lightsabers both on their crotches like that :wacko Does it seem like both washers are still on OB1's transistors? If only we knew in which order events were filmed ... Tunesia before Elstree Studios?

There's been so many books about it,the shooting schedule must be in one of them, no?

Hard to tell on the transistors, but that's the reason I originally was looking at the picture.

Maybe Mark was bored between takes and tinkered with it.

What is that big chrome thing on Mark's lap, above the saber?

It's the seat belt clasp. The Falcon has just blasted it's way out of Mos Eisley and they are straping themselves in.

Thanks. I couldn't tell what it was. I guess I need to pop in ANH for a long overdue viewing.

Just bumping because I surprised a few people on Facebook by posting this a little while ago. I know many people on those groups aren’t big into research, but thought some people here would appreciate this also.

Great shot Chris - where does it come from? If it's a still, any chance we could get higher resolution somehow? Some questions could be answered...

Thanks for sharing! I remember this photo came up a couple years ago and it caused a decent stir. So, this is the only time the clamp is on the right side?

It was just a picture I found a few years ago. I haven’t been able to find any others, so it’s the best resolution we have.

It’s the only “during production” image I know of, but I’m sure there are more. All the other right side images are the post production publicity photos.

First let me start off by admitting I don’t know what production facts are known and I am sure I am lacking in a large percent of those facts.

What I think I know is that There were at least w Ben sabers, one for a belt hanger and the other with the motor to spin the dueling blade. I would have to believe that there were at least two props for Luke as well, a belt hanger and a motorized stunt.

So my hack theory is his. The one with the reversed clamp (the one we associate with the A New Hope prop) is the motorized saber. For instance, look at this image:

    luke-obiwan-peering-into-lightsaber.jpg

The clamp is reversed. I am going to say this is the motorized hilt because I believe that oval port at the pommel end is where they plug in the cord.

The nextpart of my hack theory is that for the most part when they need just a belt hanger, they use the prop with the correctly positioned graflex clamp, like you see in the image of them belted into the falcon.

    Plausible?

The motorized ANH Luke saber was a tube with a short-knurled red button, not an actual Graflex. Check out "The Ultimate Guide to Lightsabers eBook" in the thread stickied at the top of the forum for lots of good info.

So what does the ultimate ebook say is going on with that port at the end of that hilt?

I don't think I've seen anyone else interpret that as being a port. I figured it was some shadows and reflections from the D-ring assembly myself.

I found stunt discussion at Luke Skywalker ANH Lightsabers... Variations?

Is there an Exactra card under those bubbles?!

    WTH??

EDIT: Nevermind, I can get pretty much that same look when I turn one of mine to the same angle.

If the clamp is turned, how many grips does it have? Maybe Icons was right!

Probably not, but I figured I'd just put it out there.

Hey the lever is floating here too! (parallel to the sidebar and not folded down all the way)

I kinda see it now... I think there is some funky shadowing going on with it

Still think that’s chrome tape now... amazed we can see some great detail but no lines in the graflex clamp?
