LOST - the unanswered questions thread (SPOILER discussion)

Arg... just enough to get my Lost fever going again. Hadn't thought much about it since the finale. I came to accept some things we'd never know.

  • Who built the cork room?
  • What made the island so special?
  • Why would the world end if the light went out?
  • MIB's real name (Honestly, I'd rather that they didn't name him. Just like I'd rather not ever see Wilson's full face on Home Improvement. Kind of a "fun mystery".)

I AM interested in seeing what Hurley does on the island though. I think that can be fun. Heck, if I ran ABC, I'd order 10 1-hour episodes of this to be played annually during sweeps week.

I miss it terribly, even with storylines that asked more questions than they answered, I would watch a "bad" episode of LOST over a good episode of anything that is playing on TV today........except maybe for "Lie To Me". But even that one won't have the longevity of LOST

So, two guys worked full time at a warehouse in Guam, filling supply orders for Dharma, which didn't actually exist anymore but branches of it were on autopilot.
For 20 years.
The orders were automated.
For 20 years.
They got an automated paycheck.
For 20 years.
Payroll account, unmonitored and untouched, did not run out.
For 20 years.
They never had a boss or HR person to talk to, whether it be about time off, or insurance issues, or anything else you have to handle concerning your job.
For 20 years.
The manufacturers of all those products were somehow magically paid to ship unlabeled supplies in bulk to Guam.
For 20 years.

I could go on and on...

I've been hanging out at the Lostpedia Forums discussing all the details I've been thinking about with Lost and more I never, ever would have considered. I've had a lot of my questions answered, or at least had enough facts from the show pointed out to know what is answerable and what is only possible to theorize about.

One of the cool ones is- Is Mom a smoke monster? - filling in the well and killing all those people and her knowledge of 'fate worse than death' if someone goes into the light makes it possible, or she could have been able to summon the smoke monster as Ben did. Otherwise, her powers may have been something protectors have and Jacob was able to do more than we saw him doing. (someone even suggested he caused the tidal wave that brought Richard's ship to the island and broke the statue!)

Another question being tossed around is what came first - Jacob choosing the candidates, or the candidates time traveling? It ties in with the numbers being from an equation developed in the 60's, after the jump to 1953 which is where the candidates first interacted with other people and may have caused some rift in the space/time continuum. Someone suggested that the people touched earliest in their lives were James and Kate - both of whom showed the most promise as candidates while they were on the island. James because of his superb leadership in Dharma starting in 1974 - and Kate because she was willing to save Ben in 1977.

The other possibility is that Jacob time traveled back to where the candidates he had chosen had an emotionally defining/pivotal moment in their lives to touch them.

Now, want to have your mind blown?

Kate's Dad and Juliet's dad were played by the same actor:

And the time line works out. Kate's birth is before Juliet's parents divorce (a possible cause), Kate's dad moving back in with her is after Juliet's parents divorce, Kate killing her dad and Juliet being upset about something unknown at Dharma which could very well be her learning of her father's death. Someone also asked Kate if she had family in Miami and Juliet's family lives there.

So, Juliet and Kate being half-sisters could be a possible mirror of Jack and Claire being half-siblings... it just wasn't fully explored.

The real question is why did you keep watching the show after the second season? I got so tired of the story arcs that were created and just dropped, with no regard for consistency. It seemed to me that they kept having writers quit the show and then hired new writers that didn't watch the previous episodes, started their own thing, quit, then new ones came in and repeated the same.

Kate's dad was in the military. The man she killed was her mom's boyfriend. Now it's possible it's still the same guy, but they aren't sisters.

Army guy was a step dad. Drunken dude was bio-dad. I missed the juliet back story dad. That is very interesting to know. Are ou sure its the same actor?

Also Smokey became the smoke monster because he was "special" and because the fake mother has made the rule that Jacob and Smokey can't kill each other, so when Jecob threw him in the light his soul was detached from his body but he kept a sort of "physical" form (and that could be the reason why he needs a dead body to take human form)

Best explanation I've seen to-date. Thanks! :D

Just saw a promo for Lost from the UK - SO different than what was shown here.

So, to my fellow USA'ers would you have watched Lost if this was the only promo you saw for the pilot?

I think I would have ignored everything else about this show had I been told this was what it was about:

YouTube - Lost - Promo Di Channel 4 By David LaChapelle (HQ)

:eek I'm almost embarrassed for the actors having to do that...

The only thing that strikes me is that it does have a reality tv feeling to it, and Lost was supposed to be a dramatized Survivor and they just threw in mystical stuff so it wouldn't be boring.

Very cool! I hope it goes through.

It was obviously (by walt's age) done in the first season. Perhaps a promo that never aired here, and before they hit their stride.
