Earlier in the other LOST thread I stated my frustration at LOST not having rules that were understandable and consistent. But when another friend asked for an explanation of what LOST was about, while I was writing up the premise, I started to feel like maybe we do know is enough for me.
So, I thought I'd share... here is my attempt to explain the premise of LOST:
THE LOST ISLAND MYTHOLOGY
In the center of an island, in a pool of water at the bottom of a cave where a water fall enters Ancient Egyptians built a circular underground structure with a plug in a volcano like hole that became a light with extremely powerful electromagnetic forces which can effect the space/time continuum.
Also built was a statue of a man/god with a hippo head and a temple with corridors that run underground - all of these structures are covered with Egyptian hieroglyphics.
Exactly what the Egyptians knew and wrote was lost, except this: The heart of the island is the source of life, death and rebirth. A little bit of this light is in every human and many will be tempted to control it and use it's powers. Going near it can mean an existence worse than death, and if anyone destroys it, or if the light ever goes out, evil will be unleashed and everyone everywhere will die.
To keep this from happening, a succession of protectors of this light was established to keep the light and the island from being found, used or destroyed. These human protectors are fallible, but afforded limited abilities to tap into the power of the light to conduct their responsibilities of protection and to find their own replacement.
LOST is the story of one of these protectors to find his replacement told from the perspective of his chosen Candidates. When the protector brings these flawed individuals to the island they are alone in the world, but through their experiences they learn to love one another and are refined and tested until one of them is ready for the responsibility of both fixing the mistakes of the previous protector and continuing the cycle.
Right now, I think that is all I need to know and understand so that I can enjoy watching the series again.

Any other questions that are unanswered are just part of the mystery.... As I said before, this is just where I am right now, maybe I'll change my mind after thinking about it again. :lol
