"Lost in Space" lasers, props, etc.

I know there have been a few threads about LIS replicas. Looking to see pictures of what people have. Especially interested what people think of the recent 12" action figures being put out and the new laser being put of by Sci-Fi Metropolis. Still tempted to get one of those lasers but wanted to hear some reviews first. It can be seen here:

Well hopefully this thread will have better luck trying to find someone that has purchased/received one of these laser pistols. After some initial excitement that other thread really went silent.

Well I can safely say that I don't like Lost in Space enough to buy their $600 laser pistol. :lol

I have put together a few nice items tho... I have one of the toy guns that were cast to make the original props (the actual original toy was a "Hamilton's Invaders" by Remco, but mine is a later reissue under the Star Trek label).

I also picked up a resin "stunt version" pistol recently but I'm not sure who the maker was. Mine is missing the sights, but then so were a lot of the actual props on the show! :lol

Someone should do a run of inexpensive brass parts for these replica pistols... that would really dress up a replica. :)

And last but not least I have the old Remco toy "Okinawa Monkey Division" rifle that was cast to make the "Chariot" laser rifles for early in the first season.

I personally believe that the "Monkey Division Grenade Pistol" was used for the LIS laser pistols. They were only olive green, or olive green and black plastic, while the Hamilton Invader's Grenade Pistol (the one I had, and played LIS with) was chrome plated. The MD version would have been easier to work with. They also used the MD holsters for the pistols in a couple of episodes.

The "Hamilton's Invaders" pistol was used as a laser pistol in the movie "Cyborg 2087", along with the "Topper Multi-Pistol 09" as a stun gun. I also had the ST version, but mine Had a blue body, with black grips, and muzzle bell.

You may be right about the pistols being from "Monkey Division" as well. Definitely Remco reissued the same toys for years with different colors of plastic and different labels on them.

Here are a couple of screengrabs from the show. It looks like even the "hero" prop was made from castings of the pistol, and not a real toy.

Here Maureen's pistol is lacking EVERYTHING except the oval oil-tank shaped battery pack on top...

Will's pistol doens't even have a trigger!

Granted that shot is from "One of Our Dogs Is Missing", which establishes that those pistols can be stripped down into many component parts... but Will needs to have a trigger at least, I should think. :lol

Could part of the look come from the paint that was used? I read years ago that the pistols were painted with a heavy, lead-based black paint.

I love the scenes where Dr Smith is disassembling the laser pistols, then Will is reassembling them. If those were not the hero, light-up props, then I am really impressed by the detail that was put into a one-time prop. Of course they also threw in a bunch of cheap parts that were obviously not that detailed. It did look like there were batteries in the battery pack, either C cell, or more likely D cells.

Most toy companies re-used molds. The Remco ray gun I had as a kid in the 60s was marketed from the 50s, into at least the 70s, with the only major change being the muzzle. It was a generic ray gun. A military ray gun. A LIS ray gun, and a LOTG ray gun. And those are only the ones I've seen. No telling what else it was marketed as.

Totally off topic, but someone has revived RECMO. I recently saw a shooting gallery toy that was marked with the REMCO name, and oval.

Another off topic, but this discussion has trigger a stray thought. Has anyone ever seen any photos of the laser torch from the second season of "Land of the Giants"?

David.

I think the pile of disassembled guns in "One of Our Dogs Is Missing" are all solid dummy castings, mixed together with random electronic parts and wires. Note that most of the gun parts are solid, the emitters, barrel, front of the gun body, all solid.

There is one prop tho that Will assembles, which a little more detailed for the closeups. The emitter, body and battery sections have been hollowed out and stuffed with components and wires. But I don't think that's one of the regular hero pistols, it seems to have been built to be shown being worked on.

"Now what am I supposed to do with these? Really, a bunch of solid resin castings, who do they think they are. Oh the pain!"

"Gosh! Dad is gonna have a fit when he finds out that these guns are just a bunch of casings filled with old pinball machine parts!"

"Danger Will Robinson! Do not touch the atomic battery contacts! Warning! Stop! Here, just let me see that for a minute."

Cool pics Karl. I still really love that season one pistol. But yeah, $600 is a bit high. Maybe I will give that kit a go.

Karl,

You are and ever shall be the screen grab king! :cheers

IIRC those LIS Pistols are being made by RAC.

It's amazing to think that forty years ago when LIS came out, a laser gun was just fantasy like Buck Roger's space ship. But nowadays you can get some seriously powerful lasers for less than one or two big ones.

Some folks are buying them and putting them in ancient laser tag gun casings and Star Trek phaser models, but I would think if somebody was going to do it, then do it right and put a laser in the original Lost In Space laser pistol. But gee, those things cost $699-- enough to put a poor, broke, hobbyist into a state of shock. :)

I probably could knock together a LIS pistol, but I think I'd end up making it too large left to my own devices. Does anyone have the dimensions of the 1st season LIS laser gun? Thanks.

The original photo in the thread was of the Sci-Fi Metropolis pistol replica. I have one and originally had an ICONS LIS pistol replica. The SFM prop is very nice, although the display case is not as elaborate as the ICONS one. However, the ICONS pistol only had light effects. What makes the SFM extremely cool is that it comes with both lights and sound. The sound is nice and loud, and -- to my ears -- seems authentic to the sound effects on the show. Overall, a very nice prop replica. If you can find one for $400-500, it's a nice piece.

Wy is that the people who do buy those models, never be nice enough to give a few details? <g>

Anywho... I read somewhere that the barrel of the gun is 5" which I am gonna assume is from the widened out end to the end where the red plastic cone is situated. There's a book called the Lost In Space Reference Manual that has detailed drawings of both guns; there are no dimensions, but if the barrel is 5" I figure by comparison that rounded part with the ribs is roughly 4.25" long. So would an overall length of 13" be just about right? :)

Well as this is still alive, I can fess up and say I am the builder of the Sci-Fi Metropolis Pistol Model.

I used a Remco toy pistol to make the master, and use the toy stock barrel.

I also used the toy front muzzle as a guild to machine a thicker barrel muzzel.

I use the sound effect from One of our Dogs is missing and it is a digital play beck.

I used pewter castings of the grips, (which adds some nice weight and feel) and the small parts, and with the small parts I had them brass plated.

The sights were made by Laser cutting by SLK for this model, as he had hand made the sights and muzzle from my older model.

The power pack ribbed section is the same one I made years ago.

These are now offered around $450.00.

As Sci-Fi Metropolis is a licensed seller of these, these are models legal models.

The body is all polyurathane and I cast in a 3/8 brass tube in the barrel to both hold open a path for the lights and to straighten the barrel.

For the LENS cap on top behind the barrel I buy real lens caps.

Rich,

Thanks for the detail on the sound effect -- nice to know its authentic to the show.

It is a very nice piece and, as I stated earlier, much better than the ICONS piece.

Also very loud, very bright and very solid -- beautiful work!
