EDIT: LOCATION IDENTIFIED: It's Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, NV., circa 1979-89.

Now, if possible, I need to locate the exact original photo that was used on the cover of the 'Hotel Royale' novel from the 1989 episode of Star Trek TNG.

I am almost 100% certain that the cover image is a photograph, and have verified that the original prop was created by the Earl Hays Press.

I'm working on a replica of this book and it will be much easier if I can use real photos for reference.

So I take that it's not a real book? If it was created by Earl Hays Press, maybe they will have more info about it.

They are a real prop house in LA that makes lots of stuff for film/TV, so I'm not sure if they would be willing to assist with the info I need to help create a replica.

Looking at the building, it does not look very 'hotely': too few windows and/or outside walls. The building has too much internal volume, and a significant part of the inside space would not have outside windows, which is something all hotels generally have.

To me, it looks more like, for instance, a sports arena or perhaps a railway station. The rather grand, pillared frontages suggest this too. So perhaps widen your search to include other buildings than hotels?

Also; it might have a picture of a model, as it looks a bit out of place to me, taking the the background buildings into consideration. But then; it would probably be an existing model, because creating one, just for the cover of a fictional book in one TV episode seems a bit excessive.

Alternatively, the roof might have been 'shopped' in to make it look like a different building; it is completely featureless in the picture and for a hotel at least, I'd expect a bunch of air-conditioning equipment, window cleaning hoists, perhaps a heli-pad, stairwells and certainly elevator housings etc. (again; it might well have been open, as in a stadium)...

I think the hotel is supposed to be the larger building with blue windows, under the title

Until you mentioned it, I never even noticed it. I was focusing on the short, columned building in the center and the domed building adjacent to it.

Looks almost like the MGM hotel in Vegas.

The MGM grand hotel in Vegas is similar, but not it. The MGM is cruciform, and a single main building, whereas this has what appears to be two buildings, one shorter than the other by several stories.

Edit: I may have found it. The Venetian hotel and casino in Las Vegas has the three wing building, like the book, the second building that's a bit more blockey, like in the book, and the columns and domed buildings fit. It's a simplified painting for the book cover, but I'm almost certain it's the Venetian. The scene on the book cover is night time, and blurry, so I can't tell if there are any pools or canals like the real hotel grounds.

Can't be the Venetian, it didn't exist in 1989.

Well darn. Are you sure it's an image taken of an actual building?

I'm not 100%, but there are certain elements of the image that make me believe it has to be a photo

I don’t know.... I get the photoshop feel from it. Maybe elements of numerous photos put together? I know it was most likely put together prior to the digital programs of today but it could still have been spliced together and airbrushed. I really feel like the foreground is different from the taller buildings in the back, and I feel the shadowing/fadeing between them is kind of unnatural.

Re: Need help identifying location from cover photo of a prop book

My brief googling today I found images of Caesar's Palace that are lit in blue - https://goo.gl/images/rNNNem. Caesar's also has columns and fountains, but most of the hotels do. Unfortunately I haven't seen anything like the building in the foreground.

Hunting around on Google Earth didn't help but it's cool to look around the 3D model of the strip: https://goo.gl/maps/YsFYedKqxCA2.

Quite difficult now especially as Vegas rebuilds itself every few years.

That's the one. It has the correct shape, the horizontal blue windows, and it even has the brown spherical building next to it. Thanks! NV-01-SO21-004.jpegweb1_44135-12016102101810777_7230282.jpeg

The round building was the Omnimax Theater, which opened in 1979. So the photo has to be 1979-1989.

I found these other photos that I could use for reference in having the image recreated by a painter if I can't locate the actual photo

No worries, happy to finally find one of these!

The picture of the cover of the book is so low contrast I didn't even notice the spherical building on the right...

The low building in the front reminds me of the Kennedy Center in DC.

Re: Location identified! Now need help finding exact photo from cover of prop book

First post edited to show that the location has been identified as Caesar's Palace Las Vegas, c. 1979-89.

Now I only need to find the exact original photo that was used for the cover, if it still exists anywhere other than EHP

I feel like I must be overlooking some better source for vintage stock photos. EHP had to get the original from somewhere.
