one of the projects i am thinking of tackling needs a tongue.

only problem is, i have no clue how to make one. i was thinking of a foam cutout, mold it in plaster, and use mold builder latex to make the thing... but the only downside is i have no idea how to make the bumps on there.

it has to be hollow, as part of the detail is going to be in there as well.

so... any ideas on how to make a tongue, and how to make it bumpily?

thanks in advance.

If you sculpt it, you can use an orange peel as a texture stamp for the little bumps. Just rip a part of the orange peel off and press it into your clay. Should work just fine.

Or do what I did years ago...

In 1988 a local artist asked me to make a mold of a cow tonge for her.
She bought the tonge from a butcher and brought it to me...we stuck a wire down the tonge *ewwww* and curled the tip up to make the tonge not so flat and give it some shape.
Made a 2 part plaster waste mold and cast it up in wax for her to finish off and ultimately get cast in bronze.
Gross project....
But...a cows tonge is really neat looking and very human like with the exception that it's much longer....but you can easily mold it in alginate even...and the breaks in the tonge and little bumps are all there...the problem is it really smells...bad..... :(

i think i will go the orange peel route ;)

not that i have anything against cows, but i have no local butchers, and for a small piece, i would hate to buy the whole tongue just to mold the last 2 inches of it.

appreciate the advice on it :D

You can make a texture stamp by dipping the orange in latex a few times and letting it dry up, kiwi fruit might be better texture for a tongue though, once its dry carefully lift an edge and powder the whole thing as you take it of, its better using a texture stamp of the orange rather than the skin itself, the stamp copies the texture exactly, using just the skin is not going to get the same result.
I made a tongue for my doctor tongue animatronic, two part plaster mould fill with latex for a half hour empty it out, let dry powder, then hey presto hollow tongue
