Lightsaber knife! Wedding related...need ideas ASAP!

RPF member, Evil Benius, and I are getting married on July 31st. As a sort of last minute idea we've decided to have some friends from our local 501st garrison come do a surprise appearance at the reception. We didn't want to go overboard with incorporating Star Wars into this so we'll keep it short. Our cake toppers are R2 and R2-KT so we want Vader to cut the cake flanked by two stormtroopers.

Here's the idea...how can I create a Vader lightsaber knife for the cake cutting?

Should I try to find someone selling a resin saber and cut a slit in the hilt to attach a knife blade? Or should I just try to modify a toy saber hilt? Other ideas???

Thanks!

I would attach a blade to one of the .45 scale Vader sabers. You could take a blade off another knife, drill down the emitter, and JB Weld the heck out of it.

OR....

I have/had a couple of led keychains that had a light up blade that was about 6" or so (red). Have one of them attached to a real knife? Cut away from the pictures so all you see is the led light in stead of the blade of the knife.

I got the keychains a few years ago at a dollar store.

Something like this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12996

Edit...You want a full sized saber blade to cut the cake..I was thinking a modfied knife instead. Disregard my comments. Good luck!

I think this needs to be a full sized saber hilt or you'll never be able to see what Vader is cutting with.

Good idea with the reflective tape though!

Take the guts out of a Pro Arctic Laser and put them in a Rubies Vader hilt. Remember to use some chrome tape on the hilt so it looks more metallic and less... Rubies. Voila, you have a way to cut your cake with a frickin' laser beam. Just be sure not to point it at any guests, planes or passerbies.

Ummmmm....quoted from an article about that laser:

"And here's the best (or worst) part -- it can set people (or things) on fire. Apparently the laser is so high powered that shining it on fleshy parts will cause them to burst into flames."

This seems ill advised for cutting a cake. I'd be worried about the table the cake was resting on too. :lol

However, I did find this: StarWarsShop.com - Darth Vader Lightsaber Flashlight

If I could attach a knife blade and still keep the red lights then they'd shine on the blade and the cake.

I missed the Vader cutting the cake bit.

Yeah, I would pick up one of the new Hasbro electric toy sabers (because they actually look just like the real deal), pull out the guts, insert a real knife and you're good to go.

Reflective tape on the blade is just win. And adding chrome tape over the silver plastic parts.

First, congrats. =)
Second, I would get a Darth Vader cheep plastic saber from walmart, one without lights and all, and then take the blade out and either put a small knife in it, or if you have a sword, put that in.

My solution would be to buy a sheet of plexiglass. Cut to fit a saber handle at whatever desired length you need. Sharpen an edge, it doesn't need to be too sharp, since its just cutting cake.

With a suitable red led installed in the handle, the plexi blade will glow.

This to me seems far cheaper, and easier, than trying to stick a metal knife blade in a saber handle, and will end up looking far cooler and more unique. But thats just my opinion.

I'd go with that too. But you might want to score (lightly) some lines on the plexiglass/acrylic to help spread the light from the Luxeon LED. But also, sand the edges as well.

Good ideas with the plexiglass. I'll have to see if I can find any. Maybe at a Home Depot or Lowes.

The had those lighted lightsaber spoons in cereal boxes a few years back, one of those could work as a handle. Then just get a crystal clear plastic knife and attached the blade.

OR...have a mist/dry ice fog machine, some flashing lights (the rest of the lights off in the room) and while the real cake is obscured from the fog and light show have it swapped with another premade cake all sliced up with a black.burnt icing edge to it to simulate it being cut up.

Just another approach.

Here's my Vader Style Saber I'd let you have for less than what I paid for it. It would make for a pretty flashy handle for what you want and already has double 9V batteries installed for lighting up whatever you put out the end of it. PM me if you are interested!

Like I said before, I think this needs to be a full sized hilt, but thank you for the suggestion!

For simplicity, you could justgo with one of these red plaastic salad knives:

And one of the Hasbro Vader sabre hilts. Maybe save the sound & light feature?

Coz.

This is a great idea!!!!

Hankey, reign it in buddy! How in the world am I going to afford two cakes at several hundred dollars a piece!? :lol:lol:lol Your enthusiastic approach to this is awesome, but too elaborate and expensive I think.

Just ideas! I would think a second decorated cake would be cheaper than a specially made saber/knife...or at least it should be!
