Life-size Metaluna Mutant 1955 figure...

Hello,
I was commissioned by a member here to build a life-size Metaluna Mutant figure from the 1955 Sci-fi classic "This Island Earth". Since I am also a member here I thought people might like to see the progress so far. I have the entire head and shoulders in a one piece bust sculpted and molded and what you are seeing is the first casting in white resin, it is not painted yet and a blank casting. I have not yet sculpted his backpack piece.

Ths bust is very sturdy and about 1/2 inch thick and hollow and is actually pretty light for it's size. This piece is scale to what the actor wore in the original film and is 24 inches tall by 24 inches wide. I'm currently sculpting the arms and then the torso then base will follow. As I get farther along I will post more photos.

I also do design work for a toy company that has the Universal Monster license and they are talking to Universal about possibly licensing this bust for an officially licensed product that would be available in select stores and online, it would come fully painted with a nameplate. PM me with any questions or e-mail me at: hildebeast@verizon.net

The last photo is the real Metaluna Mutant from the 1955 classic film.

I might make one of my busts available for sale in the junkyard, one is listed on ebay....Hildebeast

I have not painted one of these Metaluna Mutant heads up yet...not even in Photoshop. This is an original sculpt and not cast from any Metaluna masks or heads. I believe Don Post once sold a mask that was supposed to be from the original mold but I don't know if it was or not. There are no blue prints for making one of these lifesize so I am relying on reference photos and making measurements off the Sideshow Toy Metaluna Mutant 8 inch figure.

I sculpted the bust to be 24 inches wide and then with that reference measurement I photographed the Sideshow figure blowing it up in phototshop to get a 24 inch shoulder to shoulder measurement. From that all measurements I will need are to scale on the figure. I can see how long the arms should be and how tall to make the figure. The Sideshow figure being so small is not exact in proportions so all measurements are approximate but I found doing this type of measurements really helps to get the proportions and scale correct or at least very close and much better then a 100% guess on measurements.

I'm currently working on sculpting the mutants arms. They are longer they you would think and come almost to his knees.

I will be making an armature from conduit metal pipes as a skeletal structure to support the body as I sculpt it. I will carve foam into the basic shape of the legs and torso and cover it in clay and sculpt the detail. I will post photos as I go. Thanks for the nice comments...I appreciate them.....Douglas :thumbsup
