Licensed Firefly Browncoat

Museum Replicas has finally posted a pic and price for their Firefly Browncoat. Looks quite good, price seems decent. Perhaps i'll pick this up as a birthday gift for myself. museumreplicas.com

Now that i think about it, maybe this belongs in the Costuming Section...

EEEP. Bit too spendy for my tastes, but glad they're making a licensed replica. Go Firefly.

Edit - Makes me wonder if this is a licensed "Serenity" item, or a licensed "Firefly" item. If it's "Firefly" then I think this would be the first actual licensed replica Fox has allowed. Could be a good sign that they are starting to see some value out of the series they torpedoed.

Hmm... I can't really make out the finer details in the pic, so I can't be 100% sure, but it looks inaccurate in various places. (not that I'm a bona fide BC expert mind you)

- Buckles seem to loosely hook, they should "loop around and spring lock" when closed
- Cuffs seem oddly shaped and possibly have too much stitching
- Collar seems wrong. The original is single-layered (i.e. done "cheaply") this seems more like a "proper" jacket.
- It has the big horizontal seam going across the front. Even the "real" J Logan replica has that (to cut costs) but it isn't supposed to be there.
- Color seems way off, even taking color-correction of the photo into account.

I wonder what kind of hide is being used? There's quite a difference between cowhide and deerskin (like the original had) for example. I'd take cowhide over anything for a motorcycle jacket, but the Browncoat is supposed to flow like a cotton duster from the old west, so you definitely don't want thick/stiff hide.

I don't mean to be a downer. It's great that someone is offering them, especially if they are "official" but it doesn't look as good as some of the others out there (like the AS). It's definitely the Firefly coat at any rate. The one in Serenity had different (squared?), more scifi-ish looking buckles and that rubber shoulder pad greeblie.

Out of my price range as expected, but it is nice to know it's out there. Maybe, in a few years, one will turn up on eBay cheap and I'll snag it. It is good to see that companies are still backing Firefly/Serenity with new products.

Keep flyin'. You can't stop the signal. :thumbsup

First off, how do we know this is licensed? Unless I am missing something, there is no mention of this being licensed in any way.

As for the details of it, that is little more than a suade duster with some semi-browncoat looking buckles on it. The cuffs are WAY off, they're not even rolled back and then stitched. The buckles aren't very good either and to me the buckles are very important for capturing the look. The collar seems too narrow, and the seam across the waist ruins it. As far as I know, the only Logan ones to have the seam there were the ones that were "discounted" and made from lower grade hide.

The other fan made coats out there are much better than this I'd say, and cheaper if I remember correctly. Museum Replicas missed the boat on this one.

Well, judging by their description....

The main outer uniform of the Independents during the Unification War and now the favorite duster of Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, captain of the transport ship, Firefly. This heavy duty, all suede brown coat has leather cuffs and closes using antique brass conchos. Truly a garment to make the Alliance jealous.[/b]

I'd imagine that the fact that the mention characters and the actual name of the series would indicate it's licensed status.

Compare it to their obvious "Vash the Stampede" duster description....

Jumping right from a frame of your favorite anime series[/b]

Museum Replicas is a professional outfit after all, I highly doubt they would take the chance to mention names and titles if it wasn't actually licensed.

I can't say I'd base it being licensed off that alone, Fox has been pretty adamant that they were not going to license anything from Firefly, and with a $370 suade coat, there's not a hell of a lot built in for paying license fees I'd imagine.

All that is moot anyway since to me the coat is horrible.

Ehh, I'm not so much a fan. The weird cuffs throw it off too much for me, and the color, seam, and buckles don't help.

It is licensed but not "firefly" ... Serenity licensed, as is the Operative sword they carry. I tried it on the buckles did seem loose but over all I thought it was a decent replica...ALTHOUGH, when I tried it on the price tag was only $275...makes it a little easier to swallow

The collar on my Logan is kinda narrow too... one of the things in the Abbyshot version,if I recall correctly, is that the collar is a bit too wide.

Quite possible. If so, it was a fact that wasn't mentioned before I ordered it. (I have one of Mr Logan's medium-grade coats and there were some... problems... when I had issues with certain details that were less than stellar. Discounted or not, $700 for a coat...even if it is authentic... is not a small amount of money. I love the coat and have since learned to live with the minor flaws... and it was also nice dealing with the original maker and all... I just had a slightly soured experience which was more or less sorted out in the end.)
