'Let's talk all things Tolkien'

I
This singular fact is the only thing that has given me any good feelings about the show. But still, really low expectations. Anyone been able to figure out if Weta is involved?

I thought I read somewhere that they were. But I don't see it under their filmography.

Also a dwarf (or at least a dwarf-like hammer), and a couple that seem like the Witch-King/Nazgûl.

Saw this on the IMDb page as well, and in all my reading I don’t remember something like this? But I may be due a reread…

Anyone got any ideas?

Ah, so Weta Digital. So they are working on just VFX?
Just confirmed for VFX. Weta Workshop hasn’t mentioned it specifically, so I guess technically there’s still a chance. I will lose a little bit of faith if Wray Workshop isn’t involved. The production design was always one of the best parts of the films, it’d be a shame to lose that continuity.

Could it be a reimagined Argonath? Or maybe some other kind of Numenorean thing we haven’t seen before.
Definitely got that vibe. But I don't remember Tolkien mentioning something like that specifically. Though I think you're probably on to something, the most likely place to see that would probably be on Numenor.

A lot of the history escapes me because I haven’t read The Silmarillion, so I can’t remember if Numenor was already drowned at the time of the forging of the rings

Numenor might have drowned before the rings were forged, but Sauron's time there is very interesting history for his corruption of Men. They have confirmed that Numenor will appear in the show. I'm a little fuzzy on my Numenor details as well, but most of that extra history is actually in The Unfinished Tales. It's barely a footnote in The Silmarillion.

Very very concerned about the show, since everyone these days seems to want to make Game of Thrones 2.0. I'm afraid I don't understand that mindset, but I'm getting a very concerning feeling about the show. Also going in with very low expectations.

Numenor did not drown before the rings were forged. The Nine Men who became Nazgul had their rings well before the fall of Numenor I believe. Sauron was not seen as a major enemy by Men (although the Elves already knew he was not right), until he took over Numenor through manipulating the last king and instituted blood sacrifices.

Ah that’s right. Thanks! I’ve mostly forgotten which men Sauron gave the rings to, so I was having a hard time placing Numenor into the greater timeline.

Yeah, everybody wanting to be GOT is very annoying. I’d much prefer each show try to be unique. And in this case try to copy material that already exists ‘in world’.

After the Hobbit, I can't do this.

After reading this synopsis the nicest thing I can say is

LotR was my gateway into costuming and I devoured everything Tolkien in HS. I've visited Hobbiton in NZ and devoted a big chunk of my life to the LotR movies... I had to let any media renditions of his go ever since the calamity that was the ending of the Hobbit.

This is just...No. Cast it into the fire.
