Let's Talk All Things Star Wars (Again)

12 years ago, I make this joke image after it was announced that Abrams was going to be the director of The Force Awakens. Hope it gets a chuckle from at least one person.

Original caption: “Just heard that Abrams has been announced as the director of the upcoming Star Wars film. Here’s an exclusive promotional still from the upcoming film.”

They had Solo Story on TV this weekend and I caught it at a good scene, which was the Kessel Run sequence. But it also reminded me why I like it. Because it has nostalgia from Empire Strikes Back along with the music cue. I did like the giant surprise creature at the end and the reveal of the design of the Falcon. However, I kind of felt like Han and Lando while good were a bit close to cosplay Star Wars. Which I didn't feel when originally watching the movie.

I'm kind of looking forward to watching it in full again. I know I didn't like those early bits. But I do remember liking that bar scene with the chicken song.

Want to share a little update about my life going on.

On Tuesday afternoon I lost my grandmother. And yesterday afternoon I lost my father.

My grandmother's health had been failing for some time and been unable to eat. We thought she had rallied a little bit of suddenly able to keep food down. And then a couple days ago should begin vomiting blood became two weeks she couldn't get out of bed.

My father last year in January of 2024 was diagnosed with prostate cancer I had metastasized in his bones. Additionally it was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus and believed to have a Lymes like disease caused by a tick bite. About a couple weeks ago discovered that his bones were no longer making blood after it stay in the hospital for several days and blood transfusions he wasn't any better. Came home for a few days but eventually you couldn't move at all we had to take him to hospice where he stayed for a few more days before passing.

Keeping things on theme with this thread. As I watch my father steadily decline I was constantly reminded of Yoda's words "Luminous beings are we not this crude matter."

As a person dies they begin to get restless, as if their spirit remembers there was a time when they were healthy. Spirit wants to do things with the body can no longer. After point seems that the spirit remembers it wasn't always shackled to this "crude matter."

It's funny how we become so attached to the "crude matter" of this world. I told the friend last year 'I totally get Anakin now.' The devil came to me and offered me a way to save my father in exchange for servitude. Yeah I would have been tempted to take him up on that. Slightly terrifying thought.

My father and grandmother both played roles in my love of Star Wars. As I recall it was my father's idea to take me to see the film when I was a child. Few years later he would read to me at bedtime the book Star Wars The Incredible Cross-sections. You would provide me with my first lightsabers. The first of which was just a dowel rod with the little gray paint on one end and blue on the other side. And later he bought me one of those basic flick out Hasbro lightsabers.

My grandmother gifted me my copies of the films on VHS. The 2000 Special Edition versions. They will forever be some of my most cherished items though Return Of The Jedi almost unwatchable now.

In all of this pain and loss. To comfort to know that theirs is over. To know that they are at peace. They're at one with the "force." They're at one with our Lord and Savior.
Extremely sorry for your loss joker…

Just now reading this. Ouch.

Nobody lives forever. The pain when loved ones die is the price we pay for having them in our lives.

Focus on the daily things and keep yourself functional. It's tired old advice but it's true.

QUESTION: Did JJ Abrams retcon the ending of Return of the Jedi? Of course he did in one way, by bringing Palpatine back, "somehow." But after rewatching the ROTJ clip...

...does this now have a new canonical OTHER meaning? In other words, if Vader did NOT stop Luke from striking the Emperor, would the Emperor's spirit have entered Luke's young body to continue the Sith, as Palpatine told Rey in TROS?

I think that's been talked about for a while. The Emperor didn't want Luke for an apprentice, he wanted to take over his body.

Not sure how it would work. It seems to open some cans of worms.

I don't recall any evidence that the idea existed in 1983. Or that it ever came from Lucas.

I don't think that idea existed anywhere until the Dark Empire comics where the Emperor came back into a clone body. They took the idea from that.

That whole era was an EU continuity nightmare. DE had been written years before it was published, and it had Coruscant falling in a timeframe before Coruscant had already been depicted as still being the New Republic capital. So they had to put in something (in what book/comic, I don't remember) about it being retaken again. There was something else about how many kids Han and Leia already had and when, that had to be smoothed over. I'm fuzzy on it. What a mess.

Doesn't help, in my case, that I didn't like DE for many other reasons. The comic had nice covers, though.

Reviving dying characters with cloned bodies is one of those shark-jumping moments in a franchise.

It's like when time travel shows up in a franchise where it wasn't an original component. "Uh-oh . . . "

This may have been discussed already, but I found myself watching the Droids cartoon from 1985 and never knew they had a character named Kybo Ren.

Yes. And a $300 million write down on the economic side. The $$$$ Star Wars hotel / cosplay adventure was open for 18 months.

...but a side point. The current DHS theme park has the old Animation Courtyard, which was once the guided tour inside the Animation building and also the waiting area to board the defunct Backstage Studio Tour tram ride. That complex is now the lackluster Star Wars Launch Bay with its meet-n-greets, replica prop displays, and a movie history of the saga. Immediately behind (and attached) to this is another Disney office building, which is still used for employees. This somewhat limits future expansion/construction in this area at the end of the courtyard (you are land-locked).

Moving the executive offices over behind Galaxy's Edge into the old hotel, would free up the old Animation complex for demolition and expansion. Not saying Disney is thinking about this, but it makes sense. And that you have 3 separate and unconnected Star Wars areas; the area including Star Tours on one end of the park, Galaxy's Edge at the back of the park, and the Launch Bay at the opposite end of the park (near where Rock'n'Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror are located) is REALLY odd. As Monsters Inc. is taking over the current Muppets area, they should create a NEW Muppets are in/ around the old Animation Courtyard.

The Star Wars "hotel" building has a modest sized lobby area, flanked by the bridge set, a dining room, a gift shop, and a faux greenhouse room. I think there are 3 (or 4?) floors of hotel rooms. How you convert THAT into office space without serious additional construction is beyond me.

Would have made a great Spirit Halloween Store…

Such a wasted opportunity.

With the success of the Thrawn novels, Lucas Licensing was pretty set on having a continuity for the books. And then they thought 'hey we should extend this to other mediums'. The idea of the books and comics sharing a continuity was just a slight bit of an afterthought.

I don't know how it is now with the current TV shows, books, comics. If they are still pretending that everything counts and is canon. Especially after the mess of The Acolyte and its cancellation. I read that a Jecki and Yord book was in the works but haven't heard anything since.

They do have this Jedi Knights comic coming out this year which I'm kind of looking forward to as it has Aayla and a few others on this cover.

Yikes—they should be more careful about trying to replicate a Justice League / Avengers “charging” comic book pose with all those ignited lightsabers waving around.

Someone is likely to lose a tentacle or a limb…
