Let's find the best and easiest true gold paint finish

Hey gang,

I'm wondering if anyone has used this paint before and how were the results? does it actually look like polished gold or does it look like antique gold.

It looks like it's hard to find here in the US, so I'd have to order it in order to try it out. But I'd rather know what I'm up against first.

Thanks,

Fred

its good but it takes months to fully dry

Great finish, good reflectivity, but as Fettster says, it takes forever to dry and fingerprints WILL show up on it it it's touched.

Here's a model kit I used it on:

Looks good, but how in the world can any paint take a month to fully dry? Seems like something is missing.

Anyway, let's try and find the best, affordable gold paint finish out there. I've been looking at killerchrome, but I don't see a way to make it gold. And there's fantachrome, but that looks like an overly complex and expensive route.

I've done gold powder over gloss black enamel and, while it gives great results, is far beyond time consuming.

My next experiment may be with krylon brass. From what I remember, it does a pretty good shiny gold imitation.

I'm going to change the title in attempt to find the best gold finish.

the 18 kt krylon is not a true metal, i got a can of the gold foil, but it wasnt as shiny as i have seen here. im not sure if it was the actual finish or if i had gotten a hold of a bad can. Im thinking about trying the gold powder but id like something easier

some one mentioned in a thread long ago about this 24kt gold plate paint in a black can from michaels...anyone try it?

I just happened to pick up a can of this tonight on a whim. I happened to be near Michael's and decided to stop in. I saw it and picked up a can. I also picked up a can of krylon metallic gold.

I'm going to try and do a side by side comparison.

Well, as promised, here's a quick and dirty side by side.

The idol is the V.1, just roughly primed, no finishing techniques (sanding, etc.)

I tested Design Master 24K Pure Gold and Krylon Metallic Gold

Here's the front

On the rear, I tested the same paints, but over a gloss black finish

I think that if I polish the idol and use Krylon metallic over a gloss black (I need a new can), I'll get the results I'm after in an easy to achieve, affordable finish.

I really liked the Krylon "Premium" Gold Foil Metallic. I painted a snitch w/it and it's really pretty nice. I should test it on something bigger though.

Quick, someone send me one of these new Indy Idols floating around. ;)

I used the Krylon Metalic Gold Finish on mine. In the pic it is clear coated. I have since stripped it and repainted it the same color without the clearcoat. It seemed to take away some of the "metallicness" of the paint. A smooth surface is paramount to a good gold finish. Any surface imperfections will show thru and ruin the effect. Gold over gloss black is best.

heres a 3po head i did using that plastikote paint

as others have said, takes forever to dry and leaves fingermarks.

ive painted a few pieces with this and find the results are best when you

do a first coat with about 80-90 percent coverage and before it dries whack on another thick coat on straight away which really seems to bring out a shiney appearance. it seems to react with the first layer.

oh yeah i weathered on top of it so it hides a lot of the effect but you get the idea.....:love

This was a very wet coat of Krylon Brass...

Krylon Brass does have a nice finish to it. I've used it in the past, but I've gotten mixed results. Sometimes it came out really good and sometimes...well, not so good :lol

So Rob, when you say a wet coat, do you mean that it's still wet, or did you just do one heavy coat?

Since it's been a few days, do you have any pics of the piece since it's dried?
