Leno

Really quite unsure as to what I should contribute to NBC's decision making process, when they were more than willing to throw Conan under the Jokeville Comedy Trolley.

I'm sure Ole COCOkay has a little more gas than my Local PBS Show and NBC Customer Service - but that's just an assumption, and I am an ******* as Kerr so wisely pointed out. Assume = *******. He's broken the code.

Gotta feeling he won't have to flip Burgers either, but if he needs to, he and Andy can stay in our Guest Bedroom until everything blows over.

Putting aside the figureheads of this whole thing, I can't help but feel for the staff, most of whom uprooted their entire lives and made the move from NY to CA only to be tossed aside.

Just a ****ty situation for them.

If his lawyers were even halfway competent, they made sure that any non-compete WON'T apply if NBC terminates. That will be the debate, of course -- was Conan's refusal to move termination on his part, or was NBC's attempt to move him the termination -- but my bet is a non-compete won't apply. Even if it does, frequently non-competes have liquidated damages language that lets you buy them out, so to speak. In other words, they won't get an injunction against you to stop you from doing XYZ if you pay them upmteen jillion dollars.
 
OK so lemme get this straight....

Leno has TTS for 17 years. Announces two years ago that he's retiring in 2009, pandemonium ensues. He leaves in 2009 and gets his own show retaining most of his stock TTS bits. Conan takes over TTS.

Leno's show tanks. NBC starts bending over backwards to essentially give him his old show back, minus the title, but with the same time slot etc. Conan is effectively ousted unless he takes it in the a$$ and lets The Tonight Show become The Tomorrow Show. Conan's out, so now NBC what...sticks Leno back on TTS like nothing ever happened?

TTS has been popular since it's been on the air regardless of who hosted it. Let's face it folks, it's not about who's sitting in the chair, the show itself has become an institution.

I thought we had all become wise to the golden parachute deals in the last year or so. Unbelievable.

EXTREMELY low rent move for NBC and especially Leno. :thumbsdown
 
I think that it's breach of contract on Conan's part since the contract says the show can start at 12:05 to allow for late starts for sports coverage or whatever. NBC said "we're moving you to a time your contract stipulates" and Conan said no thanks, so unless I'm mistaken they didn't breach contract and depending on how it's written may not owe him a dime since he's breaching by quitting.

The story with Leno is confusing: on the one hand you hear that Leno wanted to retire, selected Conan to replace him, then changed his mind about retiring; on the other hand it's said NBC made Leno step down to keep Conan with the promotion, then gave Leno a new show to keep him around to so he didn't compete with Conan. Bottom line is Conan got screwed by NBC and this is the second clusterfrak about who's hosting that's involved Leno.

Screw NBC, they've screwed over two guys for that show who are funnier (IMO) than Jay.

Seriously, have you actually seen the document? I doubt anyone would be making it public. Unless there's a court case over it, I doubt anyone WILL make the document public. I'd even expect there's a confidentiality clause in there that says "No making the document public or revealing its contents." I could be wrong about that, but my hunch is that for a great big network deal, only maybe a few deal points will sneak out.

I've heard, so far, SPECULATION and SUGGESTIONS that the contract doesn't include an actual time slot specification. But nothing's been confirmed. Even if the contract doesn't say "The Tonight Show beginning at 11:35," merely saying "The Tonight Show" could be argued to be industry shorthand for the same thing. Industry custom DOES come into play when interpreting contracts, generally speaking.

I'm not saying there isn't necessarily a legitimate DISPUTE over the interpretation of the contract, but it's definitely not and open-and-shut affair in NBC's favor.

IF your statement of the contents of the document is accurate (IE: the contract specifically says "We may schedule this show to start at any time between 11:35 and 12:35" or somesuch), then yeah, Conan is probably in breach. But at this point, I don't think it's entirely clear what the contract says.


That said, I agree with you that NBC is the pig in this story.

Those are the only two I remember but it was just one after the other. I'm sure the clip will be up soon, but it just aired.

For me as well as others TTS died when Johnny retired.

I grew up watching johnny carson with my mom, and than we watched letterman.

Johnny Carson was amazing.

The very fact that that big chinned ******* is making fun of this situation while he's ruining the lives of the staff of Conan who moved with him to another state shows just what a piece of **** that ***** is.
 
.....is why I never liked the show. He just seems to be a really big Richard Cranium from what I've seen. Funny how the last time a huge fiasco like this happened Jay pooped on Letterman to get TTS. I'll stick with CBS and watch Dave poke fun at this SOB.
