Legends of Zelda - Hylian Shield and Scabbard Build

Hey all-

Daughter is a HUGE fan of Legend of Zelda -games, comics, books, you name it...

She's currently writing a screenplay for a movie based in that universe that she wants to shoot with here friends. As part of the effort, she asked if we could do a father/daughter project to build a Hylian Shield.

Sure, of course -no Dad can refuse his daughter (right?). With each successive Father/Daughter project I try to have her do more of the work with me moving into an assist role. The exception is anything involving power tools -although I'm sure that will change as she gets older.

Here's progress over the last 3-4 weeks...

Finding a reference pic and blowing it up to use as a template

Pink sheet insulation cut on a bandsaw and glued to the plywood backing in layers -then lots of sanding

More pink sheet insulation to make the detail pieces. Daughter traced the shapes onto foam and cut them with a foam cutter, then I shaped them with files and sand paper

We did the bird detail by gluing the stencil to foamcore then cutting the shapes with an eXacto knife. To seal the piece and protect it from spray paint we coated it with several layers of Modge Podge (too much -now we have a bit more clean-up to do than I'd like)

We use drywall sparkle to fill-in and smooth defects, then sand and repeat. We're a little further along than the current set of pictures indicate, we've actually done several coats of primer (pictures to come soon).

The goal is to finish this weekend, we'll see....

We're taking lots of in-progress video, so I'll have one or more C.E.P. (Crazy Eric Project) episodes covering the build.

Stay tuned.

We were able to spend most of Sunday working on the shield, great progress.

Re: Legends of Zelda - Hylian Shield Scratch Build

Looking good! How hard it the foam now that its been coated?

Re: Legends of Zelda - Hylian Shield Scratch Build

Looking good.. Have son wanting one and I am trying on foam mat. 1st attempt was not too good so looking to cut out a template from paper seems to have worked well for you.

Re: Legends of Zelda - Hylian Shield Scratch Build

Really great so far!
Are you going to make the paint job some kind of scratched up, worn, etc?

Re: Legends of Zelda - Hylian Shield Scratch Build

Sorry the delayed update, we finished the Shield project several months ago.

The masking tape we used pulled off a fair amount of the blue paint, so a lot of touch up was required. We added gold/bronze weathering on the metallic sections and black washes in the blue areas.

Here's the final shield in all her glory...

The look of it is just wonderful, you should be proud!
Now get to the sword and you would have some nice wall decoration! :D

Thanks to you both!

We had a local Comicon a couple of weeks ago and daughter picked up a foam sword -so the new project is to make a scabbard for it.

It's basically a box with detailing added:

The magic starts to happen when the edges get rounded (sanded and filed). Here's a closeup of the detail pieces being added to the top.

More to come....

Ready for paint (well, priming actually). I was out of brush-on primer, so we used some blue paint I had.

The surface is much rougher than I'm happy with, so we'll use lots of coats and a clean it up with wet sanding.

Here's where she currently stands:
