Leather Wrapped Handle

I am new to the forums and am working on my first prop...Mjolnir (Thor's Hammer). I have the head completed and am working on the handle, but don't know how best to go about wrapping it with leather.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions about how to wrap leather around a wooden handle? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

I am also working on creating an entire Thor costume. I working mostly off the comic and not as much off the new movie renderings. I'll post some images of my hammer once I'm finished.

Thanks.

Could you be a tad more specific? Cuz wrapping leather around a wooden handle could be incredibly simple OR incredibly complex, depending on what result you were looking for...

I am clueless-- but I think you soak the leather in water overnight, then wrap it. When the leather dries, it shrinks up and fits tight around the handle. But don't take my word for it because I've never even tried it. I suggest Google! Good luck!

Howdy!

DS Operative is right. Soak your leather strip(s) in water overnight than wrap around the handle. When it dries, it will shrink and be tight like it was glued on.

I did a Mjolnir a long time ago for a Halloween Costume and was very pleased with the results.

Make sure to post some pics of this!

I just finished one for Arnold's Birthday--here are some others I did--Let me know if you need any help

I started with 4 strips angled at 45º at the base and wrapped them overlapping up to the head.

I think I want to create a cross pattern, but I am open to just a simple spiral wrap....I wanted to get some ideas to see what I might want to do.

What I am worried about most is how to finish the top and bottom of the handle.

Eaglewood. Those are some nice hammers! Could you tell me how you wrapped the black handle and what you used?

If you saw Warehouse 13 last night they had a super sweet hammer on one of the shelves. The wrapping on the handle was the best I've seen.

Maybe someone can get you a screen shot.
