Leander's - Iron Man Mark IV (Hinges explained P4)

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV

Small update, working on some the gloves. looking into wired finger parts. not sure how I will keep them together. found some perfect glover for underneath the parts which I'll photograph later.

Also got someone to paint my parts, I could do it myself but this friend has better equipment and will paint it for free (it will be part of his portfolio) seems like a good deal to me.!!

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV

heej Leander,
I was wondering if you could help me out with something.
I am the Dutchie that was working on a star wars costume. I really want to build the arena combat gear that Starkiller wears in the trailers.
I was wondering if you could pep the shoulder armor: the large pauldron and the smaller keystone one? If not no hard feelings.
Following this with great interest.

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV

Heej people,

Sorry for all who have been following me without hearing anything the past weeks.

But it's me back from the dead.
well life happened, sometimes you spent more time on your hobbies then you should have and sometimes you should spend more time on your hobbies.
I've had a very busy time at the university but luckily I have more time for my Ironman project now.

at the moment I've let go of the full suit plan (for now) and I will focus on a Helmet and maybe neckpiece for a display in my room and it will be part of my portfolio. I still want it to be wearable and complete with all the electronics.

so I have been working hard with the focus on that and I will make some updates with pictures soon.

Right now since it's late (here) I'm googling and searching for hinges.
and this is what I am looking at:
YouTube - Pepakura Iron Man Helmet Faceplate/Helmet Hinges and Set Up (VERSION 2.0)
YouTube - Iron man helmet movements
YouTube - Iron Man Face Plate Hinge Setup

I want the movements as "realistic" as possible. so I don't want it to look like it's just a hing at the top. I want the faceplate to open up aswell as slide above the helmet itself.

Any idea's on this are welcome.

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV

I'ts looking pretty good so far :)
and i deffinatly like that hinge setup, I'm making a scratch build of a Mark 6 and I'll deffinatly be using that setup !

Here a picture of how it is right now..

I am very happy with how smooth the helmet is

the plan is to cut it loose tomorrow..
Still need more ideas on Hinges :D

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV

When I looked at this picture I realised I lost my ear pieces. pepped 2 new ones today and resined them aswell. I'll try to fiberglass them today aswell

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV (1st timer, Working with your advice)

The Helmet is looking really good man :)

Keep it up.

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV (1st timer, Working with your advice)

I stopped watersanding and decided to cut it onto the 3 pieces (faceplate, jaw, headpiece) I want to have the hinges and electronics working before I do the final sanding.. I'll do that before I paint.

Right now I made some hinges which I'll make a rough test hinge from so I can see if it works on the helmet so far.

Will update more later.

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV (1st timer, Working with your advice)

Okay here some new pictures where the helmet is cut in three pieces. I got the faceplate hinged and I like the open and closed positions.

And here is the Hinge I made:

The motion seems to go smooth, but I ducktaped it to test it.
I am afraid that when I attach the hinge the motionfreedom that ducktape gave me is gone and the measurements might be wrong..

Any thoughts on this?

Haha will do will do..
got a busy weekend don't know if I can get much work done.

but I'll post as soon as possible.

and hopefully I can get my hands on the lights for the eyes :D

Re: Leander's Ironman Mark IV (1st timer, Working with your advice)

Bought a flashlight with LED's in them 28 of them so that should be enough.
Still struggling with the setup though I've seen a lot of different eye's with a lot of different theories behind them.

Not sure how I am going to make my eyes yet.
These look nice:

however you can see the light coming from the middle of the eye instead of the whole eye lighting up

This thread also has some nice ideas:
http://www.therpf.com/f24/iron-man-helmets-real-poke-eye-111787/index2.html

still not sure what will give the best (and brightest) effect.

Anyone got any Ideas?

Re: IRONMAN MARK IV (1st timer, Working with your advice)

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, those links really help with the ideas.

I've got a cunning plan for the eyes on my build but as it's uber top secret I'll only reveal it if I get the damned thing working :p

well let me know.
still looking into my eyes.
will try one with reflective chromelike behind the lets and with white since there are many theories about what reflects the best

Right now I've bondo'ed an extra layer on my helmet to get the last bumops out.
and I will probably resin the ear pieces on my helmet.

Re: IRONMAN MARK IV (1st timer, Working with your advice)

Okay this is what I did.
Yesterday I was making the lines in the helmet. started out with printing the pep parts and align them with the helmet so I know where the lines were (since I bondo'ed them).

from the 2 sideviews I drew the line by hand on the back.

After a day of perfecting the lines I found it something didn't look right.
2011-05-26132405.jpg

as you can see the red line is where the line on the helmet should be and mine is straight instead of curving a little bit downward.

so I'll bondo the old line and make a new one just a little bit lower today.
Sadly I was very very statisfied with how the old line was and hate to do it all over again. but I'm sure I can get the new line just as nice

Re: Leander's Ironman..!! (Picture Heavy)

UPDATE:
Hehe I have not been sitting around waiting for an awnser..!!
Still don't know how to fiberglass the Helmet though.. also thinking about putting a bondo layer on the inside, then fiberglass so I can dremel the side lines lateron without going through the fiberglass... again tips and thoughts about this are welcome..!! (kinda hoping on some before I continue)

The left colar plate is fiberglassed, the right one only hardenned.

The neckseal, also hardenned.
SDC10977.jpg

And a boot, the heel is already fiberglassed with my old resin.. I might redo it since I have better materials now.. the rest of the boot is already hardenned

wow, do you sent me the food pep files ? claudio_hair@live.it
