This is my first replica, it is meant for a Drius cosplay, it is not finished yet and I need some help.
I have used a cardboard basis with some reinforcements and I'he applied expanding foam on it, finally I've put a newspaper with glue layer.

Firstly, I show a step by step gallery of what I have done until now:

However, I don't like the newspaper layer so I would like to know what to put in order to have a good surface to paint.
I wonder if kitchen paperwith glue would be good idea.

Thank you very much for your attention and sorry about my poor english.

Bondo is your friend. Or fiberglass resin. Given the size of it, to get it nice and smooth with just paper is going to be an absolute pain. You might try Modge Podge, I don't have experience with it personally, but I've heard some folks having success with it. Be prepared to sand. Lots. Anything that looks good got that way through taking the time to get it there. Hopefully that helps some! Good luck with it man.

Edit: Just had a thought; it's a bit pricey but check out Wonderflex if you don't wanna get involved with the nasty chemicals that are Bondo and Fiberglass: http://www.cosplaysupplies.com/wonderflex/

This is really good work, I too am working on a weapon from League of Legends. I'm making Bunny Riven's sword, and am very interested in seeing how this turns out!

After some advice I recieved, I tried to find something like a plaster to do a layer for the paint. However, after going to some shops I concluded it would be expensive and a large amount of work.
Finally, I found a cheap special glue for the foam, so I have done a mache paper (kitchen paper this time) thin layer with this glue and I will add some extra layers with normal glue.
The next step is, after adding the layers and doing the details with mache paper, sanding the whole thing to have a good result and paint it with a normal acrylic spray paint.

This is it's status right now:
