Lawgiver "base model that fires" for £20? Here you go :)

I guess it's all a matter of preference....I do the same but because dry brushing usually leaves small bristle marks that look like scratched metal, I prefer the Rub n' Buff on a cotton swab at the edges. To my eye it looks like wear through the finish instead of something done with sandpaper. Normal wear, absent abrasives leaves a fade from silver to black without the brush marks. Just my approach, though some projects do call for a heavier hand. A soft rub on just the edges does do as you suggest....give it a metal look, just more subtly. The real key is to always start with a plausible gun and paint it well, including filling all plastic assembly screw holes like commonly are done along only one side of a Nerf style gun. Sand all seam lines and fill them as needed, and sand down all marks or decals denoting the toy origins. I sometimes add real firearm screws in places they would be, as well. With a good paint up the gun will sell itself as "real" without excess wear. A bad weathering job screams "trying to make this plastic crap look real", to me, instead of selling it as the real deal. Just my opinion, to each his own. ......try it , you may be a convert.

My shellshock arrived today! Just a heads up, it's big for a pistol, but I guess it will only add to the bad ass look when finished! Added some foam as a template for the lawgiver shape and it looks rad! Kept the hole in the side where the shells eject cuz it is so cool lol, the magazine is longer than the lawgivers but I guess if I want to keep it functional ill have to keep it that way! I'll add pics when I've made decent progression but I'm concentrating on my dredd helmet firstly!

I just bought myself this gun (Lanard Shell Shock X-6 - it was bloody expensive since I live in the US - Amazon.co.uk has them cheaper, but won't export to the US, presumably due to Britain's gun laws).
Anyway, I'm planning on repainting it based on either the Dredd movie version or the Lawgiver Mk.II from the comic. I'll keep RPF updated on my progress.

LOL! Yeah, it is. Could have saved myself $15 if I'd bothered to look around a bit more. Probably when I did the search I specified the manufacturer 'Lanard'. Didn't realize Air Zone makes the same gun. All I got were guns priced at $30 or over. Ah well, live and learn.
Mine just came in the mail this afternoon. I like the fact it ejects shells - cool. One thing I don't like is the grip - awfully uncomfortable - seems like it was built for a giant hand with a tiny trigger finger. I tried it with gloves on and it's a bit more comfortable, so that will work if I ever build a Dredd costume, but as far as ergonomics go, it's certainly no Nerf Maverick.

Yeah, sorry I didn't actually provide a link in my earlier post about finding one on Ebay.
I was originally going to use a Nerf Stryfe as a psuedo-lawgiver; may keep that as a backup. My Idea was to move the clip forward:

Apparantly the Lanard X6 is a 2003 model that's been renamed to the Lanard Huntsman Judge http://www.walmart.com/ip/Lanard-Huntsman-Judge-with-Holster/27969226 $30 at Walmart. I'm sure u could shop around tho.
