Lantern Costume

Hi guys,

I visited the MCM Expo in London at the weekend, and it has inspired me to get a costume together for next year.

Problem is, I suck at making things.

So I need your help!

The idea is for me to be a Blue Lantern, and my twin to be a Green Lantern.

From what I've seen of costumes so far, they look like exactly what they are, bright spandex. Maybe some shading like on a Spiderman movie costume would help a lot? Maybe a thicker material? We're not in bad shape (over 6 foot, lean and toned) so the costume being tight fitting wouldn't be inappropriate!

Also, boots and gloves colours not matching. Plus of course, would I make a mask, or paint it on??

So many questions!! If you could help with any of them, feel free!!

We figure a year gives us a lot of time to get it right.

Thanks.

I love the idea of spandex with shading, I think that would be a great way to go. But I am not the one to ask on how to go about that.

As for the domino mask, I can imagine a few ways to do that, but this video shows a pretty cheap and effective way to go about it: YouTube - ‪DIY Super Hero Mask : Tutorial : Backyard FX‬‏

I am personally working on a Kilowog costume. I am going to go with a more armor type suit as seen in the animated Green Lantern movie. The armor will be paprika'd, probably with black spandex in some areas.

Check out my thread. I will post pics soon. It should help. I used a green long sleeved compression shirt and black tights from target. then I bought a rubies batman mask and heated foam sheets and used the mask to lay it in and shape it. Any more questions just PM me.

Thanks guys!!

A Kilowog costume sounds awesome! Let me know how it goes!

IW777 and Logan - Thanks for the pointers, I'll be giving them both a lot of though and reading time!!

If anything comes up my end I'll update.

I am making a kilowog costume too. I ran out of time so I had to go cheap. How are you making yours?

There's a guy on the go producing prints of costumes that can be custom made, so colours wouldn't be an issue....PM me and I'll send you details

I do indeed live in the UK. Xtreme Design looks like a cracking site. Especially since I was thinking Kyle Rayner Blue Lantern. Thanks!

The Kilowog, and to be honest that whole team, looks realy good. Very impressive.

Brulafu - A friend who makes Spiderman movie costumes (with the shading etc, really good stuff) has offered to help. But, I'm willing to check other options out as well.

That photo was taken last year at The League of Lanterns/ Superhero Costuming Forum photoshoot at DragonCon last year. Kilowog is my friend Aaron. The Kyle Rayner is Laban, who also lives in the UK, and who also makes Kyle Rayner masks.

Would you like me to inquire if copies of the Kilowog mask are for sale? Or would you prefer to make your own?

Hi,

Laban here....I was at MCM Expo as Kyle for the big Saturday Lantern Group. I'm UK based, a sculpter and also the chairman for the Heroes Alliance UK - Home - The Heroes Alliance UK.

I can give you a few pointers when it comes to costuming...and know alot of spandex tailors.

My Buddy runs Frontier costuming - - Frontier Costuming -

He makes printed spandex suits if that's the rout you want to take. I also make a series of GL masks - 4thWD - Home -

If not there are some USA based mask makers such as Lance at extreme design FX, or Mike Schffbauer (look for him on facebook).

If I can help, let me know.

Hey there, I'm Ryan, and as Laban has mentioned, I run Frontier Costuming. I was the Movie GL on the Friday at MCM Expo. Here's a pic in case you missed it.

For the shoes, I just had the feet of the suit glued around simple plimsoles, and it worked a treat!

As you'll see on my site, I've got comic style suits too, and I also do custom work. So if you and your brother are after something specific, I can accommodate. I'm also UK based, so that makes things a tad easier. :p

I'm currently learning to sew the suits myself, so for the moment, I can only offer the raw prints, but that'll work out cheaper for you in the longrun. Get in touch if you're interested and we'll figure something out. My email address is up on my website.

Ryan, I've PM'd you.

Fishy & Logan - Really appreciating the help and links.

Since I want to be a blue lantern, and Kyle is the only human I know of who has been one (Hal being Green/Blue doesn't count!), I guess he is the one to go for. Though I may go for a painted mask and make it a bit more me.

I've started working out, and will be starting to save for the costume very shortly, so hopefully I can get something really good together!

Very good point Wolf!!

Would that be a harder costume though?

On one hand, I was a sprinter (county level) so that could be apt.

But on the other, his mask would hide most of my face, and I quite like it still being obvious it's me, even when I've got my Joker makeup on!
