Laminating, paper props?

Ok, I know most of the threads in this part of the forum are about the paper props themselves, and many of the threads are about specific films, or shows, but I'm going to post this here because I think it fights. (if not feel free to move it. :) )

Ok, so I love paper props, but lets face it some of them have to be laminated. (IDs etc.) I'm thinking of picking up a cheep laminator, at like wal*mart, or place like that, just to do some stuff for my own collection..

Anyways, when it comes to things like ID's, who do you do the rounded corners. and rectangular, or elliptical , cut outs for the clips that allow you to attach them to your cloths? I mean, is there a punch at does that cut outs? (not just round ones, but long cut outs for the clips. ) Is there a tool that will give me consistent rounded corners? Any other info on make laminated paper props would be appreciated too.

Thanks
Jason

The rounded corners I just use a paper "corner rounder punch". It is a little harder but works. The lanyards and attachments to place the badges on clothes or uniforms can be gotten at office supply stores.

Kinkos will laminate for you. They have regular lamination and one that is a liitle more rigid. for badges I like the more rigid. They should also be able to supply the retangular or olipticle punch to attach straps or lanyards or whatever. Just ask them or call, they most likely do it for all of the businesses in the area anyway.

The ID "slit" punch is a special punch and stupidly expensive for what it is... I have one as I have done some larger runs of All Access laminates for bands and they paid for it...

As for rounded corners you can get rounded pouches if not you have two options get another stupidly expensive die punch that cuts out the whole shape from a sheet or use the corner rounder punches you find in scrap book stores...

As for your laminating machine, the cheap ones from Wal-mart and the likes will do OK for thin laminates, they generally fail for thicker lams or if you are trying to do one after another without taking breaks... You can do multiple passes but you risk bubbling from overheating... My advise is if you are serious spend the money on a decent laminating machine with adjustable temperature, the difference is so night and day from cheap ones...

I have a GBC that has adjustable temp.
Think is was about $60 at Staples.

IIRC you can get sleeves that come with the slot in place already.
I usually just use a small hole punch and exacto knife to make the hole.

WOW! Thanks for all the info. It's looking more, and more like Kinko's is the way to go, for simple paper props. but I still might keep an eye out for a deal on the punches. :)

I've had good results with laminate luggage tags. You can even find them pre-punched with the proper hole.

I got a cheap card laminator on sale at an office supply store a while back, it works great for laminating small stuff.

If you look around, you can find different types of laminating pouches, including luggage tags and ID tags. These will often come with the slot already punched out, and even include the clip that goes thru the slot. If you want the slot to go thru the paper as well, you can laminate it with a pre-punched laminating pouch, then use the slot in the plastic as a guide to cut a slot out of the paper, using an Xacto knife.

For laminating larger items, check with your public library. The one I used to live near had a poster-size laminator which they would let people use for free. All I had to pay for was the laminating pouch, which I could buy from the library, or bring my own that I got from an office supply store. If your library has one, it will be cheaper than going to Kinko's.

You can get the laminate pouches with pre-cut rounded corners and slots...it is available commercially. I have experience laminating band VIP and All-Access passes and the pouches we used had both already in place so all we had to do was slip in the passes and run them through the laminator. I can check with some of my crew friends and find out where to get them if there is interest.

Most of the ID size pouches I've seen out there, are set up with the slots for them to hang horizontally, And a lot of the ones we see as props on shows go the other way. The luggage tag style pouches, do have the slot set up, for them to hang vertically, but they are just a little large for some prop IDs, so I would have to cut them down a bit, witch is fine, but it does mean I would have to add the curve back onto the parts I trim down. So, I think I need to either, go with the Luggage tag size, and buy a corner rounder, or just start taking them to Kinkos. (or check into my local Library. :) )

I love my wal-mart laminator 'cause it was CHEAP. So are the pouches. I do have to do 3 or 4 passes to get a clean looking seal.
