So this may sound odd in a room full of overly charged male hormones but I see your bikini bondo pics and I think if one thing...

You should be wearing something with a bit more coverage. You really don't want that body filler on your skin. I am also hoping that you are using a dust mask or respirator while sanding. Especially with the power sander. That dust does your lungs no favors.

Not to put a damper on everyone's ogle, but safety while working with these things is paramount. I'm a professional costumer and I know people that started doing this in theatre back before OSHA told everyone that these chemicals would kill them that are now physically impaired from it. Especially as a female. Over time exposure to toxic chemicals without precaution can lead to birth defects should you ever choose to have children.

That said. Good work so far. It makes me smile a bit just to see a lady taking on an armor piece.

You guessed it, MORE Iron Man clogging up the forums :] I'm more a sewing person so this has been a completely new experience but a very fun one so far! I hope that by posting here it'll motivate me to finish this up..sorry for what seems like pics of the same thing over and over :wacko

First I made a mock-up version of the sharkhead/dungbeetle pepakura file in 60 lb cards stock to see if it would fit and to get a little practice in

Yeah, sanding bondo can be really difficult to get smooth and pretty, if too much is applied, but you seem to be doing quite well. I'll agree with the advice to use and wear safety gear when working with these things.

+1 on the respirator recommendation, and please don't take people giving this sort of advice as criticism, please learn from our mistakes. A lung full of Bondo dust is about as good for you as smoking rolls of fiberglass insulation. You can get them at sears, walmart, etc for a few bucks for those little masks (better than nothing) or 15ish dollars for a fair quality filtered respirator. Good for you for wearing safety glasses, when I was the age you appear to be in your pictures I was way too stupid to bother protecting myself and ended up with a shard of and exploding sanding disk embeded in my eyelid missing my eye center mass by less than 1".

Helmet looks great! I'll give you props for it. I couldn't do all the folds. I'm more of a hands on guy with plastic and woodworking. I can't wait to see the end result.

nice progress so far.

Its nice to see some that its not just the guys that enjoy this hobby.

heres a little tip which will make your bondo work easier....

get some acetone and a chip brush, then when you are applying the bondo, load your brush with acetone and you can "paint" the bondo smooth which will drastically reduce the about of sanding you will have to do.

i know alot of people have commented on your bikini picture and im sure its probably hot where you are but please make sure you are carefull when working with polyester and if possible wear something that covers your skin so protect it.

Another thing I do a lot of is primer. Lots of primer.

The reason being that it's easier to see spots that need work. I'll sand something mostly smooth, prime it, hit problem areas, prime it again... repeat.

The primer also helps, over time, to fill in tiny scratches and scuffs.

I use Evercoat Slick Sand for that, and yes it's very efficient. Slick Sand is a high build polyester primer w/ a MEKP to activate/harden it. You don't even have to use a spray gun. You can also brush it on.

If this was a Male pep builder, I bet it won't even fill 1 thread page. This is like getting out of hand. You guys never seen a female firefighter? It's the same thing. Kudos to women and womens rights, however this is a predominantly male board and it is just sad that talent has to be expressed in such a typical MTVish way.
