Kuhn Global 'Death Star II'

At the time, on IKE, our Tomcat squadrons were the VF 142 Ghostriders and the VF 143 World Famous Pukin' Dogs.

And to bring this right back home to the world of movies, correct me if I'm wrong but both the term "Ghostrider" and the Pukin' Dogs squadron made some entry into Top Gun.

The Tomcats in the opening sequenenes were referred to Ghostriders, right? And the model F-14 on the end table when Maverick is up late with insomia is a Pukin' Dog, IIRC...

I'd have to look at screencaps to verify the VF-143 Pukin' Dog... but the tower DID say, " Negative, Ghostrider... the pattern is full. " before Cruise did his hot dog fly-by stunt... ( which STILL makes me laugh. )

Dunno if that was referring to Cruise flying a Ghostrider bird or not. I suspect not. VF-142 is and was out of NAS Oceana, VA and not Miramar, CA. Well, Top Gun showed them flying birds from just about everywhere, but I think the main outfit was the Sundowners. The movie does suffer some accuracy issues. Also, at the time, the USS Enterprise ( CVN 65 ) was homeported there on the West Coast as well, so it makes sense it would have a west coast Airwing. The flight deck sequences were shot not just on Enterprise, but also a Nimitz class... possibly the Carl Vinson ( CVN 70 ). I can spot the differences in the boats pretty easy.

For Rob...

This is the marking for the 'Pukin' Dogs:

This is an old image of the CAG bird from IKE in Hi-Vis livery.

The 'dog' is actually Pegasus. But it looks like he's upchucking... so there you have it.
