Awesome test Hand .

Cant wait until March lol
[/b]

Neither can I. It'll be exciting because it's never been done before ( as far as I know ) in this scale before other than the original filming miniature. No instructions. No examples ( other than photo-interpretation ) to follow...

A challenge... Since before the sun burned hot in space, I have awaited...a challenge.... :D

Bump up for Lighting Test 6. These are actual backlit tests taken on a light table with a FL tube behind the acrylic test piece used in tests 4 and 5. No Photoshopped lighting effects this time. It's all in-camera.

"Your little lights are blinking, Clark...."

Looks great.

HINT: Has to do with a gas station. ;)

LOL. Nice.... :D

Thanks for the comments. This really will be the last of the tests for awhile. We plan to order the acrylic hemispheres about January, so that there is enough lead time to get them here by March in case of any problems.

They will have to be custom sized, because according to the LFL source material I have, ( From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives ) gives the Death Star II diameter at 137 cm. If I've converted correctly, this is 4' 6". So when we say the 4-foot Death Star, that's obviously just a round figure....pardon the pun. :D

I'll bet it's free. You'll have to pick it up. :lol
What I want to see is how you would get it in the house.

The hard part is sneaking it by my wife...

Look Honey, there is a sale at Nordstoms.

While Bob is away,.. I started thinking about the DSII and began looking into how the original was lit.

I understand that the sphere was sprayed with silver metalic paint to contain light leakage and then a drill was used to remove the paint down to the clear acrylic sphere's surface in order to produce the millions of windows that were lit. This is great news and I can't wait for Bob to return so we can go over this. I was going to have him use fiber for each and every window, thus increasing the time ivolved and material cost... :eek . By doing what the ILMer's did.. it will save Bob time and me duckets.... As I am sure may have been their directive as well.. :lol

Now.. I know LED's were used for random effects in the open deck areas as well as some surface lighting, but this technique is definitely what I wish to be done. Does anyone have any refernce to this?

That's exactly what I would do with the DSII. The first DS they put a stage light in the sphere after they made the windows by removing the paint anywhere they wanted a window. The DSII I would enclose the basic superstructure and use one light source for the windows, then run LED's into the area under construction. That would save a ton of time and materials.

^ I'm a step or two ahead already on the lighting. It's already been covered. My blog and this thread explains that I will be lighting the surface pretty much as you just described. The only thing to go over is how Kurt wants to treat the lighting of the exposed construction.

Note notes in lower left corner. ;)

( Oh...resumption of commission work begins Monday. So technically I'm back, but I'm not. :D )

SWEEEEEEET.

I knew I had heard that somewhere before. :confused :p

Figures... see what happens when ya leave for a few days. ;)

Welcome NOT back. :lol

Hope all is well. No need to rush things yet if you're not up to it.

That's what I get for not paying attention, excellent plan.

I'm ready to get back to work.

The Raider was about 70 to 75 percent done before my family emergency. It's just a matter of doing the FUN stuff now and rapping up this project...then shipping it out.

I too once had dreams of this one... found pics fromlike 9 years ago... scrapped for other projects. Will be cool to see it done.

Steve

Ohh yeah ... I have identified several of the photoetched brass pieces they used to reverse mask the SS DSII but unless you are planning to built it studio scale not sure it would help. Lots of photetched ship railings used to make reverse paint masks to simulate detail. Very clever indeed.

^ Cool.

It WILL be built studio scale. When the time comes, there will be a lot of communications and requests for references. Actually anytime between now and the start of this project IS the time for any references anyone might have.

Looks like you had a nice start on your own project. ;)

Here are some screencaps I took from the DVD:

Very impressed by all the hard work and skill shown here.

Good luck.

Thanks. B)

I was tinkering with the idea too. My thoughts were to buy a pair os spun brass hemispheres and use some etching compounds to put the surface pattern and cut edges into the model.

Never got past the price for two hemispheres at 24". $300 each.
