hello chaps,
i dont frequent or post in the the general modelling section much as i have really gone away from small scale type subjects. but this is where i earned my stripes.

anyway i picked up the kotobukiya 3po and r2 set on ebay real cheap and ive got the set sitting in front of my tv. anyway im a fiend for realisim and im itching to start weathering the 2 droids, with all the muck and grime, oil leaks etc..

i know the droids are posed in the classic pristine anh end scene steps but i dont think i can help myself............

help me rpf.... your my only hope

should i or should i leave them alone?

thanks for your input

I would do it very subtle, or otherwise it will look cheap, just enough to make some oil drips on 3PO and r2, and a thin wash of grime.

.

i hear what you say, i think if it was too heavy it would ruin it.

very good point.

the 3po is annoying me most as there is very little definition on the plated surfaces. i was taught when painting minitures to emphasize panel lines etc.. to bring them out on a small scale subject.

but there is also the point of where the droids are and that they were pristine at that point in the film.

I would say: start out slow and see how it evolves. Go for it.

Oh... could you please give a height measurement on the two, as I'd like to see how tall they stand. Thanks. :thumbsup

For R2, I would first run a lighter grey in all the panel lines to reduce the contrast. I don't know why they decided to fill them all with black. Then a slight amount of wear and dirt in the cracks.

just gave them a quick measure.

3po is just over 10 inch without the base and r2 is just over 6 inch without the base,

the base is just over 8 inch wide if that helps.its not a huge piece, probably a bit smaller than i was expecting but nice all the same.

the level of detail is pretty good so id like to bring some of that out on 3po as they have done with r2 . i do recommend them.

the plating on 3po is nice. r2's legs are impessive in my opinion.it looks like the painters did spend a bit of time going round all of r2's panels on the skins. all in all a nice set. glad i got them at a decent price.

i agree with you there, i think black is too harsh for the scale. i was planning using a dark grey on 3po's line work.

Thanks for the measurements. Fits exactly with the 1:7 scale they are supposed to be. Sadly just a tiny bit too small for what I collect, but I agree, they look very nice.

Looking forward to your weathering. :thumbsup

I was sure they were 1:6 scale. IMO these are the best scaled replica to date.

I think I'd pretty much leave them alone... They are supposed to be at the final scene where they have just been spit polished for the award ceremony... they WERE clean on screen ;)

However if you're bound and determinded I'd try something subtle on 3PO like a burnt orange or clear orange wash. On R2 I think gray and brown is the way to go to get that grungy look. Unless you want to go full Dagobah in which case all bets are off and just muck the holy heck out of him with black dark brown and dark green... :)

They are a really nice looking pair.

Possibly if you weather them you could go the whole hog and change the base as well. Instead of the Yavin steps you could go for a Tatooine sand dune or a death star floor.

That would set it apart from the clean ones and put your own stamp on it.

Cheers Chris

well i might have to wait before i takle them as im on morphine painkillers just now and my hands are shaking like a b'stard.

the more i try the more they shake

grrrrrrrrrr

How strange, I am on Vicodin because of loss of use of arms & hands from nerve damage.
Small world!

Heck the shaking might add a randomness to the weathering...
