I’m in love with Ana De Armas, but couldn’t get myself to see this because of Rian Johnson.

I was apprehensive about seeing anything else from RJ. Worst case scenario, I got to look at her for a bit. Turns out he's good at his own films. But Star Wars? Not so much.

I just tried watching this and got an hour in before I shut it off and read the synopsis on Wikipedia. It sounded somewhat interesting but not all that original by any stretch and the fact I couldn't finish it says a lot. I wasn't all that impressed with Looper but it wasn't terrible and I loathe The Last Jedi, but I figured I'd give this a chance. Some great casting and Ana DeArmas is a fine actress and nice to look at but I just got bored with this one. It's like Rian couldn't make up his mind whether he was making a lighthearted comedy like Clue or a serious mystery. The tone just felt so uneven and I couldn't sit through another hour plus of it. Plus the parts that were supposed to be humorous fell flat.

I often get the sense that Rian thinks he's being clever when he's actually just being pretentious. Why his films are lauded by critics is beyond me because I've seen far better. Clue being a perfect example of a comedic take on the genre that was expertly made.

So congratulations Rian Johnson on subverting my expectations by making a 2 hour who dunnit that reveals who dunnit about 45 minutes into the movie. The rest didn't really matter all that much by then. If the old man was really trying to protect her he could have just left escorted Ana downstairs and said goodbye to her in front of one of his kids, went back upstairs and died in his sleep leaving no suspicion about his death. Problem solved, end of movie.

EDIT: I did rewatch this all the way through with the Mrs. Though it was better than I initially recalled I still have my issues with the plot it and we found even more holes that undo it. Of the three films, Looper, The Last Jedi, and Knives Out, Knives Out was the best but I'm still not a fan of Rian Johnson or his movies.

I watched this last night, it was enjoyable but the writing kind of fell apart for me. The performances, sets and cinematography were great, though DC's accent was so terrible it kept making me think of Caleb Crawdad...

It was almost funny and almost clever. Not a bad movie but not worth a second watch. My daughter was comparing it to Clue, I've never seen it so it's on the watch list now.

I took his "odd" accent as being more purposeful than anything. I feel like they set his character up to be the "outsider". All the other characters were a part of the family and friend circle, and he was the strange new element that was going to throw them all off their game. If he'd had his normal British accent, it would have been trope. If he'd had a "normal" American accent it would have been a pseudo cop drama. But giving him the extreme southern accent kept him the odd man out; it was so nice and comforting it was unnerving. It made him the outsider, it kept him "sitting at the sidelines by the piano" the whole movie through, not just in his first scene.

That's my take anyways. lol

Clue is better. But that's more of a comment on how AMAZING Clue is. Comedy superstar line up, almost all at the top of their games.

We played the game a lot when I was younger and more recently this spring when I was laid off for a month. I'm going to try to find a copy of the film that has the alternate endings.

Any version you find these days has the alternate endings. They play one after the other in a way that makes some additional sense.

Clue is included in Amazon prime streaming if you have that.

LOVE Clue!!! I would love a 4k version! I only have the DVD.... although, Amazon has it on BlueRay for $8.59.... hhhmmmm

I agree wholeheartedly. Murder By Death is far better than Clue IMHO. Firstly the writer, Neil Simon. Secondly the cast, Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, James Coco, Maggie Smith, David Niven, Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Truman F-ing Capote!
The story is a blast, and was heavily cribbed from by Clue, down to the fake out multiple scenario ending.
Eileen Brennan must have had some serious déjà vu when she was filming Clue seeing as she was in Murder by Death a few years prior.

I had the weirdest experience watching this movie....

I got right up to the point where the girl is going to tell the whole family what happened - as Daniel Craig is opening the toxicology (or whatever) report...

and then as she says "...I..."

Daniel Craig pushes in front of her and-

The sound cuts out.

and suddenly, this movie where Daniel Craig has been all chill, is running around waving his arms frantically.

But it's all in pure SILENCE.

And for the first time in the movie, I wasn't bored. I was like "OH ****! this is why everyone likes this so much?!"

It was all about watching body language, who responded with what facial gestures!

It was so gutsy!

and then it kept going and going....

Then I realized my Sonos had disconnected from wifi.


I told my friend this and he asked "HOW could you POSSIBLY think that was how it was meant to play out? Why would they cut to silence"

I'm like "NORMALLY I wouldn't think it was intentional... but it felt dramatically timed EXACTLY like that scene in The Last Jedi where all the sound cut out"

So dumb.

Anyway didn't care for the movie. But I'm not a fan of Big Mansion Rich Family Murder Mysteries
