Knight Rider Scanner Light strips?

I just got a new car yesterday. While it's nowhere close to KITT, it is black and it does have lots of voice activated features. My wife thought it would be cool if I could have the red light strip going back and forth like KITT.
Where should I start on this? Is there a "KITT kit? I want it to be out of the way, I want it to come on when the key is turned, I want an easy on/off switch for when I don't want to use it.

If you can point me in the right direction or point me towards the K.R. experts who would, that'd be great.

I found a few on ebay, but wanted to know about the installation. I'm not very mech inclined but I follow instructions very well. :lol

not sure about where you live, but here in indiana any red or blue lights in your car is against the law, so you might wanna check up on that before you spend the cash

So brake lights are against the law?

As long as the car is not moving it's okay.

I was hoping to hear from any knight rider guys' who've had experience building a KITT replica.
I've seen several versions of the scanner on the internet. Some of the videos look right, some look wrong. I want to know which gives the most accurate look to how the tv car scanner looked.

Yay Knight rider stuff... okay here goes. First, those ones on ebay are absolutely horrible. They are not even close to being screen accurate. The original scanner used in knight rider used individual halogen bulbs - for some reason this created a "trailing effect" so it wasn't really just one bulb that was being lit at a time.

Those ones on ebay probably use LED lights - and they turn on and off - so there is little to no "trailing effect". Plus, they aren't very well made.

The best scanners are the ones that are made just like the knight rider movie. they are not cheap though. Typically they will run from 300-500 dollars. I have had dealings with Mark at Mark's custom kits and they do good work. I can recommend their stuff. Here is the link http://www.markscustomkits.com/Exterior-Products.htm One if his scanners that was broken went on ebay for over $300 a few weeks ago.

The officially licensed stuff - from Louisell - well, you can't go wrong with that company because they're the only ones that are licensed from universal to make replicas. They must be super busy, however, due to the new series.

One or two companies have high quality scanners that don't use bulbs but high powered led lights - however, I have no experience with these- or the companies so I"ll leave that out for now.

If you don't feel like spending so much money then there's always the LED tube option. A lot of companies make LED tubes that can scan back and forth - some of the newer ones are better than others - I suggest you take a look at the "ICE LED scanner" (Just google it) it changes color - and you can make it do different patterns - so it'll not only match the back and forth scanner like the 80's KITT but the new version of KITT's scanner that is coming out. Plus it changes color as well. Of course, keep in mind that the LED ICE scanners are obviously thinner than the real knight rider scanner so it won't look completely accurate. However, if you're putting it behind your grill anyway- then very few people will be able to tell the difference.

Hooking up the scanner is fairly easy. There are only two main wires. You can connect them directly to your battery (red = power + and black =ground -)
So first you connect the wires to the battery - then you run the wires inside to an area near your gas pedals and connect it to the control box- and then, from the control box, you run the wires back out to the scanner.

The only really difficult part is to find a hole behind your dashboard, around your gas pedals or underneath your dashboard...(around that area) to run the wire through. Some cars have places that have existing wires for you to run the wires through - others cars require you to drill a hole.

On a side note - yes, some states say that it is illegal to drive with the scanner on - because the red flashing light on the front of the car is used to represent official business only - like the police or ambulences so be aware that someone may stop you for that. (and yes, there are reports of people being stopped)(and no, I know a lot of people have "neon underbody lights" but because those are facing downwards the police generally do not mind - or are too lazy to stop you.)

If you need further help... let me know..

and if you're a knight rider fan.. check out my new computer that I built.

I saw one of those kits in the JC WHITNEY catalog a while back. Its full of all kinds of car/bike stuff. may want to look there

Laws vary by state, you really need to read the state and local laws that you will be under...

For example simply mounting them on a car in Illinois is technically illegal

(a) The use of red or white oscillating, rotating or flashing lights, whether lighted or unlighted, is prohibited except on:

Notice at least in Illinois it says lighted or unlighted, both being illegal, and it's not simply a ticket in Illinois it's a Class A misdemeanor...

Texas law is very similar

http://law.onecle.com/texas/transportation/547.305.00.html

Texas, Transportation Code 547.305
(b) Except as expressly authorized by law, a person may not
operate or move equipment or a vehicle, other than a police vehicle,
with a lamp or device that displays a red light visible from
directly in front of the center of the equipment or vehicle.
(c) A person may not operate a motor vehicle equipped with a
red, white, or blue beacon, flashing, or alternating light unless
the equipment is:

Again it makes no mention of them being lighted or off, it simply says "a motor vehicle equipped with" is illegal to operate...

If you want to take your chances, feel free but if you get popped the law is generally pretty clear...

Thanks for posting that link ave4uevoli! Makes me want to sell my car and get a KITT car now!! However I think the wife would kill me if I did that :confused

But MIGHTY tempting :lol

About six or seven years ago, I was heavily involved in turning my 1984 Firebird into a replica K.I.T.T. I made some good friends over at the Knight Registries http://www.knightregistries.com/. They pointed me to Mark--as previously mentioned--at Mark's Custom Kits. I met Mark at the Trans Am Nationals in Dayton, Ohio when I lived there, and you cannot deal with a more professional, and understanding guy. His parts come with detailed instructions on how to install you equipment, and they are of the highest caliber.

Sadly, my dream of owning a Knight replica was not to be and my Firebird threw a rod in the engine just months after I bought it. But if this is something you really want to do, then Mark is the way to go.

theres a guy right here in my hometown that did the knight car, and had it at the con last year, i did the old vader force threatening thing at it and they got a pic and did a video of me doing it.

so at least here in NE oklahoma its legal, cuz he drives it all over town.

do you know anyone who can do electronics? With some simple soldering and a few electronics from your local radio shack and the JC whitney scanner you canmake a replica like those hundreds of doallr ones.

THis is how I made mine.

THis site have the aluminum shell instructions:

this site has the electronics schematic that it hooks to:

Hope his helps.

About 20 years ago, a friend of mine asked a cop (here in California) if the red moving light on the Knight Rider car is illegal and the cop said yes, a RED light on the FRONT of the car is illegal because red is reserved for Emergency vehicles only but ...if you had a yellow light in the front (like KARR) then that's ok, as long as it's not red. You can however install red lights on your car but they have to go on the back of the car.

im guessing, this guy i know of here in town, doesnt have it running while he drives tho, out on the streets. and i also seen another guy have one on his pontiac firebird that works at wally world here in town. its running the light bar, but only while its parked in the lot. i would imagine like you stated, driving with it running is, and may just be illegal here too, but i dont see it mattering much if the vehicle is parked.

Exactly. If the police don't see it running, they'll never know. As long as you have the capability to switch it off and on at a moments notice, you're cool.

pretty much what i figured. i mean, theres 2 guys in this small town that have them, and have for a couple years, and they ever got caught, im sure they would have been told to remove it or else.

Most places state it IS illegtal to have them running while your driving.
But he best part of the above scanner bar system is that you CAN switch it off and on.
And on a related topic, I am currenty negotiating with a gentleman to build th new dual scanner from the NEW kniht rider car for his Mustang GT.
